So...buddy and I have had three full games with LR Romans vs the Ancient Spanish swarms. We've been tinkering with what to deploy first and last in the opening set-up sequences.
Romans seem to drop the heavies first, since it's kinda obvious where they'll end up. But more and more it seems like the troops to keep until last (where before, for the Romans, it was the Gallic Cv (Arm, Sup) 4 paks x 2)....are in fact the lowly LF...placed to counter some deployments (like Spanish slingers in front of the celtiberian HF) or to counter a flank force (i.e. bravely delay and eventually give up lives for the better of the rest of the army!!).
Was wondering your thoughts, oh souls out there, on what you like to place early in the march order and what goodies you like to keep to the end.

Generally I also have placed legionaries down in the first batch in my LRR army--but the second batch has been lights and or cav, with more legions in the third--building off one wing. The one time I ran my friend Mark's Classical Indian I paired the Elephant battlegroups with MF bow, placing an elephant-archer 'team' at a time rather then putting the nellies all down at once. It worked well.Blathergut wrote:So...buddy and I have had three full games with LR Romans vs the Ancient Spanish swarms. i go opposite. i place lights first because they're so maneouvrable, then mix up heavies and mounteds.
this is mostly because the pikes need to be in a position to trundle forwards as fast as possible.
more than a few times i've been bale to get them nice and closer to mounted that can't run without exposing a flank to the pike support troops.

I like to put down my light troops later. They can go in front of the heavy stuff and block the enemy from it if it needs to move elsewhere. And most of the time you know where your heavies need to go anyway, its just a case of a foot (12MU) left or right after that for good match up. If your lights can pin his heavies and allow yours to move even better.
