Impetus ....the new kid on the Block!

Post by paulus45 »

Have tried FOG....very Fussy....not well organized.....not for introducing newcomers to the game.

Impetus ....streamlined ....fun....easy to read ....and great for new comers to the game ....try them and you will be converted!

I have bought Fog and the supplements ...very expensive ...Impetus does it all for less ....cheers Paulus ...sorry about posting this on the FOG forum

This kind of ill-natured spam on a competitor's forum, a forum they provide for free, has assured that I won't even look at Impetus.

Hi Paulus

Lorenzo is a great friend of ours so really glad you like his rules. We have both set out from different starting points but hopefully neither set is any the worse for it

Hi all....I did not intend any offense or ill natured critisism about FOG, I have played quite a few games and enjoyed them. I have already spent about £70 on the rules book and the supplements so I have done my share in supporting the rules system, also I have got the DBM, DBA, WRG 7th/6th edition rules as well.

I have been playing ancients for about 30 years now so I can fully understand the hard work that has gone into FOG, but to be honest I thought that FOG was going to be a bit more accesible to newcomers, I like the POA mechanism and also the CMT tests but they need to be fully understood.

If you want a deep longer game that you are going to devote a lot of time too then maybe FOG may suit you, but if you want a faster more fluid game then I recomend Impetus, I also like the more flexible basing system that comes with Impetus.

My last point is when you play wargames they should be fun and entertaining....so lets get some younger blood on the Ancients/Medieval wargaming scene instead of the older ones like myself debating about the merits of different weapons and how troops theoretically behaved ........cheers and best wishes Paulus :P

Dear Paulus, I am sure you did not mean to offend but it is always a mistake to blatantly promote another set of rules on that sets own forum. It is extremely unlikely that you will create in your audience one of those Paul of Tarsus (or is that Paulus of Tarsus)moments but in fact create the opposite affect i.e. you may suffer the fate of Paul of Tarsus (Crucifixion anyone).
I think there is scope for comparison particularly if you think some mechanisms work particulaly well but once again beauty is in the eye of the beholder and what you like may not be anothers cup of tea. An example would be on the dbmm site where they extol the virtues of Stratagems and weather in their rules which FOG does not have. If that is important to them then they have probably found the right set of rules for them to play. They ignore however that in dbmm cavalry cannot shoot and skirmishers cannot skirmish which to me is more important. Again personal preference.
It is now unlikely that we will ever all play the same set of rules although many of us do own more than one set.
I suggest if Impetus is good then it will be added to the library of several players but your initial blatant sell was not the way to go.
Now if you would like to climb up on that cross.

OK, this may be a touch draconian but I am going to lock this topic.

In my expereince of waaaay too many forums and lists this sort of topic, no matter how well intentioned the poster, has a nasty tendancy to turn nasty and end up with pointless slagging off.

If you have an issue with my decision please email me (nikgaukroger <at> blueyonder.co.uk) and we can discuss.
