Scenario Analyzer Spreadsheet (Open Office).

Post by rkr1958 »

Using Sun's Open Office spreadsheet, I developed a scenario analyzer (6 pages shown below). The examples below are created from a 1939-mod scenario that I generated from the base 1939 scenario. To use the spreadsheet you open and load relevant data from the *.scn file of interest. Some adjustment of the formula ranges would be required for other scenarios. Also, if you rename any pages then editing of page 4, column I (unit city equation) is necessary. If of interest I'd be happy to make this spreadsheet available.

Sheet 2. CEaW v1.06 Units Reference

Sheet3. City Hex #, Name & X,Y Coordinates Data Worksheet

Sheet4. 1939(mod) Scenario Starting Units Data Worksheet

Sheet5. 1939(mod) Scenario Initial # of Units and Equivalent MP Cost

Sheet6. 1939(mod) CEaW Countries Data Worksheet

I'm really intrigued as to where you are going with this RkR.
Are you working on another variation scenario or a complete re-work?
-or is this to inspire others?

For me it's about the history. I'm not interested in "gaming" the game. I'm after getting the most historically accurate simulation of WWII out of CEaW as possible. Maybe we're there now ... maybe not. I'm trying to find out if there are more tweaks that we can make to make it more accurate.

Given two competent players that follow an historical timeline of events I want a historical type outcome 80 to 90% of the time. Given two competent players and strategies, the question shouldn't be if the Axis defeat the Allies, but do they last longer than they did historically. If so, the Axis player wins, if not they lose. Also, I want a game that "accurately" simulates historical possible variants, such as Operation Sea Lion. I'm after an historical simulation of WWII (in Europe in this case but I'd love one for the Pacific) that allows for exploration of realistic variants or allows for recreation, on a grand scale, the military events of WWII.

From 1976 - 1981 (my college and graduate school years), I probably played AH's Third Reich full campaign scenario at least two dozen times. I played all these solitaire. I have the computer version of this game, which I've played probably five times. Once as the allies vs the AI, once as the axis vs the AI and three times solitaire.

If I had to rate CEaW on it's historical accuracy (on a grand military scale) I'd give it a 85 or 90. By the way, I'd give AH's Third Reich an 80. Two things missing from CEaW, which keeps me from giving it a 95, are amphibious units/troops and paratroopers. I know that these two have been discussed at length in other threads and it would require a major rework of the game to get them in. I understand and accept that adding these isn't cost effective from Slitherine's standpoint. Though, I'd be willing to pay an "upgrade" or even full price for a newer version that included these most people probably wouldn't. I accept all this and just enjoy what we have. A wonderful recreation of WWII in Europe on a grand (Crops level) military scale.

Probably, one of the most balanced appraisals of CEAW I've read.
Thanks

Happycat and I have made a mod trying to make the game more historical. We even have special house rules and victory conditions. We've playtested the mod a lot of time (20+ times) and made adjustments every time. Now we finally got to a point where we feel it can be released to others.

The most difficult thing to get working was the sub warfare, but it seems a lot better with the latest adjustments.

We also have a complete log of all changes made to the vanilla game so it's easy to see what has changed. Send me a PM or post your email address if you're interested to have a loot at our module. Then I will send you all necessary files.

Our mod has so many changes it's almost like a new game, but we both think the modifications work well. :)

@Stauffenberg,
Please make your mod available (Slitherine to host?).
Given how few mods exist, (any at all for 1.06?)
I'd love to try it out.

Given there are house rules, can it be played solitaire?

regards
A-

We will make the mod public when we've playtested the latest changes. Then all files will be available. If you want to try it already now then it's possible to send via email. You can then playtest against Rkr1958, Happycat or me.

The house rules will not be followed by the AI, but you can still abide by them when playing against the AI. See this as a minor advantage for the AI. :) All other parts of the mod will be used by the AI as well as the human player.
