Couple of modding questions

Post by CroCop96 »

Hello, everybody. My buddy Funat and I are intent on creating a Yugoslav Front 41-45 mod. We have no experience in custom modding like creating new units, but we have some experience in the Editor.
Could someone, please, inform us:

1) can I make units change their allegiance (switch sides) during a scenario?

2) how can I create custom rosters for nations to use in scenarios?

3) how to make a campaign mod from a bunch of scenarios? Is the right way to create scenarios first and connect them via parameters, or is there another way?

4) how to actually ''make a mod a mod'', with all its independent folders, and not just a custom scenario loadable under ''More campaigns''? Where do I start: do I first create all the folders like units, animations etc.?

There is a tool thread for modding in Scenario Design that may help. But let me put it to you this way, if you are planning a new mod like you have stated, it would be welcomed here. The unfortunate part is that there are a LOT of Panzer Corp players that really are not even remotely acquainted with the excellent mods that have been so graciously contributed to this game. But the game will go on for years with players who have not even discovered it yet and also with the players who discover the mods. It's called "paying it forward". Take a look at IL Sturmovik, greatness stands on its own. :D

All of what you are asking is possible and very doable, it involves a considerable amount of serious and focused detailed scripting. A person usually learns this by trial and error. Lots of trial and error AND play testing. I attempted it myself several years ago when I had great dreams of an Eastern Front mod and made over two dozen maps with another 18 planned down into Iran. It takes dedication and time...............and concentration. Maybe one day I will be able to pick it back up again and try to make something interesting for playing nothing but the Eastern Front post Kursk or post Kursk victory and into 1948. Chris10 was the inspiration for this I was doing. Sadly he stopped, but a successor came onto the scene, actually several.

Before I could finish, Battlefield Europe was made and offered, Legacy of Versailles, Soviet Storm (that beats Soviet Corps hands down), the DMP mods, Amulet, Wehrmacht Balance, on and on, etc. etc.. I could never have duplicated anything remotely or distantly approaching that quality  . I did make some pretty maps though.

Certainly it can be done; just look at the magnificent mods made by so many GREAT Panzer Corps benefactors, too many to name really, but all deserve a lot of appreciation for what they have done for all of us.

If you will take it slow and step by step, you will get help here from those who know. If you will take the mods that you like and break them open to look at how they are made (the files, scripting, etc.), you will learn a lot also. You will get help from members here because the A**holes never last or get banned. It's a great community, not as large as it was once, but still a great community who still love, mod and play this game.
Old Timer Panzer General fan. Maybe a Volksturm soldier now. Did they let Volksturm drive Panzers?

Did you check the sticky about tools/guides? Esp. those on campaigns and scnearios:

Those should answer at least some of your q's. As for 1 - I think you can't directly switch a unit's side (not sure here tho), but IIRC what can bedone is to remove a unit for side A, then create a new one of this type for side B.

For (1) I can tell it is possible to switch sites. Soviet Corps do this for Romania units. Best is you check in the scenario editor how they solved it.

I haven't tried making a unit change sides, but a "Unit Action" script should work. This can be used to upgrade units in game (eg park your Mark 1 tank here to get it upgraded to a Mark 2, or to apply an across the board upgrade) or even change the unit from one type to another - for example, your destroyer reaches the port harbour and converts to a bunker or a ground unit.

Scripts can be a bit challenging to understand but if you use the editor to open other people's scenarios that include actions similar to what you want (eg Romanian one in Soviet Corps), it can help. I'd recommend making a back up of the file before doing this to minimise the frustrations of accidentally saving a changed file.

Maybe you have already solved this but I ran a quick series of tests (quick bc I got lucky) and on the third try was able to get my aux units to switch sides. For a while I was also wondering if this were possible.
Here is a screen shot of what my unit action parameters look like. If you scroll down on the image, you will notice 'set' has been changed to 'add' and 'value" was changed from 0 to 1. The first two runs I didn't do anything with these fields and the unit action didn't work. Once I changed them, problem solved! I think (but I can't remember for sure) on this pc I am using v1.22 so not sure if that makes a difference. Hope this is of use!
