Question about Volkssturm Unit from Soviet Corps

Post by HalfLifeExpert »

I just learned yesterday that Volksturmm are available to purchase for your core roster in the base game and GC, which is great. I just wanted to ask at one point in the chronology of the war does it become available for purchase. Late 1944? Jan 1 1945?

How are you planning on using Volksturmm in your core army? They are incredibly bad infantry. Basically cannon fodder.

They are indeed cannon fodder. However, they can be useful in certain styles of play. For example, you can use them - and other weak units like captured Russian tanks - as virtual speed bumps. It's far better that a disposable VS unit absorbs fire from a JS II rather than your experienced & perhaps overstrength units. Remember that JS II's, SU152's & several other Russian heavies carry a limited amount of ammo. If they run out after a few turns, you can counter attack them with no risk. At a cost of 60, you could purchase & deploy a number of VS units. You'll probably have more of a problem with the number of slots you have available than with their cost. As they invariably disappear, you can deploy more of your experienced core units to fill the vacated slots. With any luck, they'll chip off a few strength points from the attacking units before they perish. If you deploy them in close terrain like cities & forests this is entirely possible. Panzerfausts were cheap & widely available at the end of the war.

Primarily for historical accuracy and a bit of a challenge for those "post-Ardennes Offensive" scenarios. I know they are not good units. Would be kind of cool if the GC scenarios that had "Volkssturm" before SC release were updated to replace the stand ins for the newer unit

Hmmm, I wish I read that suggestion earlier HalfLifeExpert, there might have been time to implement it. :(

The trouble is, playing the Germans at a high skill level is about being cost effective to absolute extremes. It requires spending no more than you have to and taking near zero damage. There isn't money to sacrifice, even on cheap units. This is why recon are near useless as well (except for the invulnerable Russian one, LOL).
