Re: Battle of the Bulge Tournament - Round 1! Fight!
And what we've discovered from this today is that there seems to be a rounding error on the website! The results have been recorded correctly but I can see a game that's finished with a score of 5-26AlbertoC wrote:There are 30 points available in a game, and they are split between the two players depending on victory conditions (as follows):
- 30 Points to the winner if Automatic victory is obtained (by reaching the Meuse before the end of the 19th).
- 95%-5% for a victory on Day 20
- 90%-10% for Day 21
and so on, down to
- 55%-45% for Day 28
That does not add up to 30!
I'll find out who's to blame and have them fix it else they're getting sent to the front!
edit: The threat of the Ostfront has done it's job. The issue is resolved. As you were commanders.

Re: Battle of the Bulge Tournament - Round 1! Fight!
Actually I'm 31/29 and loosing.
What would happen if my opponent let time to pass to finish ALL his available time?
Who would win?
1º- He would win because he have more points?
2º.- Or he would lose because he spent ALL his time?
Today it's September 15, 2016 (thursday) but in the game we only advanced to day: 17 and 18 December repectively (axis-allied)
Regards

If he waits until time runs out for him, you'd win.
We hope that most of you will complete your rounds. If we'll notice that not many of you managed to complete the game, we'll give you more time for Round 2 and 3.

Re: Battle of the Bulge Tournament - Round 1! Fight!
Giving more time to some players? This will be eternal. Sincerely, they DON'T deserve to play a tournament. The question is: to play or not to play, but not to interfere with people who wants to play more dinamically and be more active and compromised.AlbertoC wrote:If he waits until time runs out for him, you'd win.

I know this is a PBEM game, but also a tournament. People wanting to play a tournament should be more compromised with it and be more ACTIVE.
What about taking in consideration spent time? Counting the time left as points. This should be an incentive to p'eople to be more compromised with the tournament.
As in example, for every 5 hours not spent 1 point.

Well... some of us have jobs and can't play a game 24/7.
I think the time period might be tight for some of us with work and family obligations.... we'll see....

Re: Battle of the Bulge Tournament - Round 1! Fight!
I´m 49 years old, with work, family, 2 dogs to walk out and lots of obligations too. When I decided to join the tournament I took the decisión of being commited with it. Not to be watching football on TV instead of playing this tournament. Yes, some people prefer to watch football on TV instead of playing here. Which looks like a joke for those who are commited with their decisions. So watch TV or play tournaments, but please, be consistent with your decisions and act with maturity and consideration towards other players.Barthheart wrote:Well... some of us have jobs and can't play a game 24/7.

To be more precise, just now I should be walking out the dogs with my wife, but I'm here waiting for a turn, while the other side who knows? Perhaps watching TV, playing console or anything else. Time management should be part of scoring to avoid this.
This is not just a normal game in wich time can be totally flexible, this is a tournament, and time management can be a kind of metagaming for some players.
Re: Battle of the Bulge Tournament - Round 1! Fight!
Hi guys,
Just saw the comment from my opponent. The first day of play went great with moves every couple of minutes with breaks for meals. At the end of the day I warned him it was my last move. The next day I replied as soon as I got a move, but they seemed to be spaced hours apart. Today I think I've had two moves from him. Given that he seems to be upset is it possible that there is some sort of logjam in the system with moves not getting through?
I do work during the day, but I take my iPad with me!

Re: Battle of the Bulge Tournament - Round 1! Fight!
It all depends on how many games are completed and how many end by forfeit.lgscarlet wrote:Giving more time to some players? This will be eternal. Sincerely, they DON'T deserve to play a tournament. If we think that too many games ended by forfeit we'll probably come to the conclusion that the times were too tight, and we'll decide to give more time in the future.
That said chances are that due to the swiss tournament system this should be less of a problem in Round 2 and 3, as if you won Round 1 by forfeit you'll end up facing someone who also won by Forfeit and is likely more committed.

Re: Battle of the Bulge Tournament - Round 1! Fight!
Hi guys, well Four hours to go for the rest of us that are still engaged in battle..I know i kinda gave up on the 20th(in one of my battles anyhow)when i realised that it wasn't scenario based etc!!..Anyways after getting back into it yesterday and NOT giving up i can say i cant wait for the next two!..
Brucep i think the day the tournament started i know we had real bad weather here in Uk maybe that wasnt helping with the flow of things ?Ive spoken to Dell and hes fine:)and he didnt mean to come across in any negative way.(also hes based in the USA,i dont know where you are but maybe if your say Australia then that wouldnt help)I cant say i saw much lagg/interference as my opponent seemed to make his move more or less not long after i sent him every one of mine so,i guess some at work took a tablet with them idk everyone to their own and lessons learned hopefully in time for round 2!
Enjoy the rest of the tournie folks.

Re: Battle of the Bulge Tournament - Round 1! Fight!
The system rewards you for moving fast and that's all we can do and its not realistic to expect people to put their life on hold when playing, which is why round times are multiple days, not a single sitting. When it is your turn, your click ticks down. If you run out of time you lose. It is exactly like competitive Chess. If the game is not complete in the time limit one player will always have run out of time and forfeited so if you think you can slow the game down to avoid losing, think again.
We can have a tournament which is more of a blitz, intended to resolve a game per evening, and then kick off again the next round the next evening, but this was not setup that way. This adds issue of time zones, and really requires you to be playing against people in your region for it to work. Not saying it cant be done just that we decided not to do that this time.

Re: Battle of the Bulge Tournament - Round 1! Fight!
Trying to get into my game this morning and it says "You are not a player in this game" even though it's in my list says it's my turn.
I did notice that it has way more time available than I thought there should....
Not too worried as Eric was creaming me anyway so was going to lose.

I must say 3 things:
1.- Thank you Matrix/Slitherine/Shenandoa for making this game, it's absolutely great and addictive. Simple, fast but addictive.
2.- Thank you Matrix/Slitherine/Shenandoa for making this tournament. Sincerely I love it. I think this game is a perfect format to do tournaments.
3.- I would like to loose or to win by playing not by forfeit, but this is life...
Regards.

@bartheart
Hmm, from looking at the tournament summary (http://www.slitherine.com/tournaments/s ... selround=1) it looks like Ekrommen has won one game and is ahead in the other.
Is it the "other" game that you're getting the message about? My guess is that turns have turned properly, but you're getting an inappropriate error message. I'd like to get the guys to investigate so we can fix it in the future.
EDIT: We believe it's because you've timed out in that game but have hit an edge case. The result should be unaffected but we'll make sure that we handle the message better in the next patch (which will be not until after this tournament has finished, level playing field and all that)
Ta!

Yeah, I expected that I had timed out and was surprised to see more time and it being my turn.
So we don't get to see the final stage of the game when we time out then?

Hi let me know if I can help with the error. Barth and I are moving along at a great clip. If we need to restart that's fine.
