Dan's progress . . .

Post by stockwellpete »

I am just flagging this up in a more prominent place. It is just a list of the things Dan has been working on ready for the next patch(es) . . .

planned for asap release fixes/features list (in the next builds):
- a terrain mouseover text info displayed in the mouseover battlegroup info panel (added)
- settings to toggle on/off "Replay" and "Game Ended" in-game visual indicators (added)
- settings to toggle on/off the common/detailed in-game GUI (added)
- fixed a problem with some uncommon legacy FoG(RB) scenarios side element format (modified)
- fixed a problem with some uncommon legacy FoG(RB) scenarios missing the year element (modified)
- fixed a problem with some uncommon legacy FoG(RB) scenarios missing unit element's nation attribute (modified)

- investigating and fixing a problem related with MP DAG games having more than 2 nations included (WIP)
- updating the Editor

I will keep this updated so we can follow Dan's progress over the next few months.

This is a very helpful post. Hope you can make a sticky of it to follow the progress in the future and to see changes when a new version is released so we can test and report bugs accurate.
As you are a veteran in the series aren't you able to make a guide for newcomers based on the new edition with all the new mechanism and leave the obsolete features out of it?
Maybe some small tutorial map we can play with the guide open to learn the basics?

No, I am not able to do that. First of all it would be a very time-consuming job and secondly, I am not sure exactly how the second version is going to turn out yet. The best thing for you to do is to start playing the original version in multi-player and ask questions using the chat facility while you are playing. Lots of players will be prepared to help you learn the game.

Pete's right, Cabelnexus, this is a very welcoming community and there are a lot of players here, me included, who would be only too happy to help you.

Thank you both very much. I return to the old version as well I started a few month ago and should accept and/or add some games myself soon. It should be great if I can become an experienced player myself and help new players out when I know how the new engine turns out. You helped me a lot making a descision which one of the games to start learning now.
Looking forward to a Steam release of the game in the future because I have some Steam friends really interested in the game.

Do you think this product (since I get the coupons ;-) is helpful in the process of learning the digital game?

That is for the table-top version of FOG so not directly relevant, I would say. I would spend coupons on Pike and Shot or Sengoku Jidai if you haven't got them already. They are not the same as FOG PC but they have some of the same authors.

I bought this book for the same reason, Cablenexus, and although it's a beautiful work, it didn't really teach me anything about FoG. The best (and probably only) way to learn is to play, and play, and play. Experience is the key.

Thanks Pete, Dan and Slitherine! I am now running both versions but will focus mainly on the old until most problems are sorted. Any chance of a new tournament Pete?

I'll have a think about it. It will be a smaller format if I do, not like the FOGDL.

Hi,

I'm still following developments on fog unity and have noticed a downturn in bugs being reported which is most probably due to players going back to the original game. It would be nice if perhaps we could have an update on the progress of any patches that are being worked on and possible time schedule. Despite all the flaws that have been highlighted since the unity version came out we also had some great developments to the game. For me the ability to move certain troop types around the battlefield and then mount or dismount elsewhere was a great idea and I'm sure more gems lay hidden waiting to be found once the game is running more smoothly.

Look forward to your reply.

I have spent hours and hours finding bugs, copying files and sending them off to Dan but nothing seems to be happening at the moment. It is a matter for Slitherine and Neurosoft to sort out really. It would be good to know what the plan is. I have stopped using the new version altogether now as it is not much fun in its current state. While we are waiting I am getting into Pike and Shot which is very solid and excellent fun.

Funny you should say that, Pete. I bought Pike & Shot when it was first released, but didn't really like it. Recently though, I've returned to give it another go and have rather enjoyed it.

Yes, likewise. Will have to go back to P&S and explore further.
