Leaving a fortified position

Hi folks, great game. Some games I have played are almost very good but frustrating for a few reasons and I normally post a lot in the hope that the flaws are corrected.
Some games are so awful that I don't bother posting at all. This one seems to have very few flaws. One I was surprised to see today was a foot unit in a medium fortification leaving it to chase down a unit it had defeated in melee. Once outside the fort the unit was annihilated. If a unit is in a solid position inside a fort is this normal behaviour - if they defeat an attacking unit they are likely to leave a fortified position to pursue it?

No, but there is a small % chance that they will get carried away and do so if they are defending light or medium foritifications. (None if they are defending heavy fortifcations). These things happened in real war.
