Is Winter War better than Morning Sun?

Post by Bylandt11 »

I loved the first OOB game. I bought the two expansions without reservation. But US Marines was rather repetitive. And Morning Sun was even boring. I couldn't bring myself to finish the whole campaign. Was it bad scenario design, the wrong subject matter (Chino-Japanese war) of the missing naval combat, so important in the orginal game?

So I'm in doubt about buying Winter War. Is it better?

Yes it is better. Though there's only 1 scenario with very limited naval battle, if you are mostly into that. What you will have, is quite many defensive battles vs. quite a strong enemy, and the opportunity to use space properly to take advantage of the game's supply system against your enemy. And it has a few more scenarios.

I love those type of battles. I always thought there were fare too few of them in Panzer General or Panzer Corps.

Thanks for the advice.

I'm enjoying the scenarios; half-way through, and the campaign has been quite varied!

I like it too, although there are quite a few big defensive battles where the russians just pound you and without much room for maneuverability.

I played the first 5 scenarios and except one - which was just a slaughter (luckily this time on my side :) ) and therefore boring - the other 4 were really hard to make a success with most secondary goals achived too. I had many times reload turns and also several times reload the whole mission to make it better. OK, I must admit, I played it on the hardest difficulty. :)

For me this OOB DLC is the first one, I just play(ed) PzC as hell (Battlefield Europe mod so many times...), so it is a quite refreshing gameplay to mee. Although I feel, that is is not yer really polished - I have a huge list, what should have fixed, developed, but still a great game.

For Winter War, the arty settings are perfect - stronger arty would unbalance the game and make this game also Feldhaubitze Corps.

The only big issue for me, that without arty backup and real defense possibilities - I do not feel, that cities, sandbags, forests would do much help... - I cannot build a solid defense line. Also bombers cannot be really effective guarded: the fighter of the enemy takes not a big damage and the bombers take at least 4.
