Winter War Specializations

Post by LarryThorne »

I'm pretty new to this game so I apologize in advance for what might be a stupid question. I'm at Summa mission and still haven't chosen any specialization. Is my game bugged or does that come at a later stage?

Thanks for a great game!

I just went through all 13 scenarios of Winter War using a cheat code. No specializations were offered at the end of any scenario, as they normally would be at times if you had just scored a victory. The same scenario victory cheat code method worked in other campaigns, so unless they changed something for Winter War by which you need to earn specializations in a different manner, say by achieving secondary objectives as well as winning the scenario, it appears that there aren't any specializations in Winter War. [Nobody has said anything about Winter War and specializations in this forum but over on Steam, at least one fellow said "I'm just finishing the Raate Road scenario. Doesn't seem to have any Finnish specialisations, though, which is disappointing."]

The devs mentioned that they would like to rework the specialization system completely. Current specialization system has no reasonable application to the Finnish faction, so I'm guessing the devs just decided to lock the system for now since there was no time to rework the system.

I would like to draw your attention to Specialization system rework in this thread:

Feel free to suggest some Finnish and Russian specializations :)

Thanks for the replies. I'm just glad I'm not gonna have to replay missions in the future due to missing something the first run.

Just a few suggestions/ideas for specializations:

Motti tactics
Ryti-Ribbentrop agreement
Vilho Nenonen "Korjausympyrä"
Swedish volunteers
Korpisota
National unity

There also should be sniper units added as they were a crucial (especially symbolic) part of the Winter War.

I think the best sorts of the specializations are the either/or options. I'd like to see the specializations result from the player making choices on where to expend resources and effort on the national level.

In the case of the Finnish campaign, a good one would be an early choice between Swedish Volunteers and Purchase Agreement with England, basically making a decision on where the foreign minister concentrates his effort. Choosing Swedish Volunteers could provide a squadron of Gladiator fighters and an anti-aircraft unit free of charge, while the Purchase Agreement with England would let the player purchase squadrons equipped with British built fighters during the Winter War scenarios. The choice to the player is basically 'get free equipment' or 'be able to buy better equipment'.

Another choice would be one regarding factory allocation, like Sniper Rifles or Anti-tank Rifles. Depending on which choice the player made, it would boost the stats of infantry units against either infantry or mechanized.

Perhaps Motti Tactics vs. Rugged Defense. Either player infantry would get reduced efficiency penalties or they would get better defensive stats. Basically making the player choose whether they want to have their infantry units to carry more heavy weapons or to travel light.

I Agree! Another one could be a choice between German tanks or German air support, which both played a major role during the end stages of the continuation war, especially in Tali-Ihantala (although I haven't yet played the mission so don't know how it is in the game). There is also the refined artillery strategy of Nenonen.
