Can red suppressed unit attack?

Post by ptje63 »

Im not sure if I understand correctly - have in my turn attacked and crippled Soviet infantry while crossing a river down to 7 and left it RED suppressed.
In return-turn, it attacks my unguarded artillery without a problem for -9 points.
I thought a suppressed unit cant attack - whats the use for suppression otherwise:
-in your own turn to achieve easy victory
-in AI's turn, for instance, to prevent attack because it needs to refit or recover from suppression...

supression only last during YOUR turn. once the AI turn starts, supression is no longer in effect.

As for what supression is good for during your turn:
- Prevent the unit from offering resistance (firing back) when attacking it
- Forcing it to retreat if it cannot be fully destroyed and wasn't dug in, i.e. to get it out of the way or to push it into terrain more favorable to you.
- Forcing a total surrender if the unit needs to retreat but all possible hexes are blocked
- Supressing an artillery protecting another unit to allow you to attack that unit without running into artillery fire
- Same as above for anti-aircraft guns. Supress them, then bomb them to smitherines, or bomb something nearby if you're sure by doing that you can get to the AA and destroy it so it can also not harm you in the AI turn.

Supression is basically one of THE single most important mechanics in the game.

I knew but forgot all about it... Yes - the art of suppression sometimes seems essential, good lesson taught here ;-).

In the old days certain artillery units ( the big ones) left permanent suppression. Also long range bombers did too!

I believe the trait has been disabled even if you add it to a unit there isn't long term suppression anymore.
