How to deal with pesky Light Horse?

I wonder if more experienced players could give me some advice...
I've just played a series of games between Poles and Lithuanians, with the computer running the Lithuanian side. I've found it extremely difficult to deal with the many units of Light Horse that the Lithuanians field, as I have few if any (this is in a campaign and the computer is picking the initial armies).
Is there a good way to deal with them? If I let my Cossacks and Armoured Cossacks engage in a firefight with them I seem to come off worse, and if I force them to flee then I end up getting surrounded by them within a couple of moves.

Hi Bombax,

The Lithuanians have a very similar force selection to the Poles, so I am surprised that they have more light horse than you. When you get to select new armies at the start of the next year, select as many light troops and missile units as possible to counter the enemies light troops. It you start a new campaign select Player setup and do the same thing.

Thanks Paul. I think I chose the Auto army set-up - big mistake, or just unlucky on this occasion!!!
