Dummies guide to Unit Stats

Post by slithpile »

I'm a fan of Fantasy Wars and Elven Legacy. This looks like fun. But I'm intimidated by all the unit stats. Deciding which units to build, or how to upgrade my core units is a headache because the stat screens are so complicated. I'm sure it will be second nature to me eventually, but it makes for a painful learning curve.

Is there a dummies guide or post somewhere that spells out what all the numbers on the unit stat screen mean? I've read the manual, but I'd like something that dumbs its down for me, with examples like "this unit is better at defending against tanks because of this stat" etc.

Regarding land combat, there are different stats for infantry attack and defense on one side and vehicle/mechanical attack and defense on the other.

So high infantry attack and defense stats measn obviously a unit will do better vs. infantry. High vehicle/mechanical attack and defense units will do better vs. tanks or other mechanized units.

There are similar differences in other branches, for example small vs. big air units stats and small vs. big ship stats.

For example an air unit having better stats vs. small air means usually it's better vs. enemy fighters, while higher stats vs. big air usually do better vs. bombers. Bombers themselves can do better vs. infantry, mechanized (as above). Dive bombers do better vs. small ships, while torpedo bombers excel vs. bigger ships. Some bomber types may also switch between bomb and torpedo loadout at a base or carrier.

Then there are class-specific advantages: for example anti-tank units will give free support if they're adjacent to attacked units, which makes them more potent in defense situations.

Overall you also want to keep an eye out for specific abilities (or unit traits) like engineers being able to clear mines or build bridges.

Generally it's best to have a mixed core of infantry, tanks, artillery etc. Artillery provides powerful fire support, infantry does close combat vs other inf or support units, esp. on rough terrain or in cities, and tanks can do encirclements, defeat enemies in the open etc. This may vary when a specific scn requires a somewhat different approach (for example due to heavy terrain), but as a rule of thumb it may help.
