Historical Scenarios

Sengoku Jidai: Shadow of the Shogun is a turn-based tactical and strategic game set during this turbulent time; primarily focusing on the Japanese Warring States period and Japanese Invasion of Korea. Other armies from East Asia are also made available to simulate different conflicts across the region.

Historical Scenarios

Post by Adebar »

First of all: Congratulations to the team on the release of this fine looking game! :o

I've got a question regarding the historical scenarios in the game - could someone please post a list of all the battles that are covered? There is nothing in the descriptions.

Hello there! It has been an extremely long time since I last used this account, but I thought I might as well as I am the same person (just older).

I bought and have been enjoying this game immensely. I hope this doesn't upset anyone on your team, but I prefer it to Pike & Shot - a game which I also like. Thank you for making an enjoyable, fun game and thank you for writing about the historical background to much the stuff in the game.

I noticed the location marker for the Chiksan battle seems a little off. The game places it near Wonju. I am not an expert, so I apologize if I am wrong, but both Hawley's "Imjin War" and Swopes "A Dragon's Head and A Serpent's Tail" describe the battle as south of Seoul (Hanyang). Hawley further describes it as near modern day Pyeongtaek, which is along the west coast of Korea.

Thanks for making a fun, informative game!

Thanks. I know they mention south of Seoul but I can't seem to find the actual location because when I searched for it in a Koren map, it turned out to be east of Seoul.

Anyway James Lewis, in his book The East Asian War, describes Chiksan as a border town in between Gyeonggi and Chungcheong province. So based on those two sources, the correct place may indeed be south of Pyeongtaek (Gyeonggi province). It is in the northern part of Chungcheong province.

The reason for my confusion is the romanisation of the name. Western accounts spell it Chiksan so I searched for 칙산 which led me to the wrong area. It is actually 직산 which should be romanized as Jiksan.

Thanks for pointing this out.

Wow, thanks for the rapid reply!

I just wanna say I have also had issues figuring out where many of this stuff is. I have been reading many of the texts with Google Maps open on my computer, but between the changeable place names and the different romanization systems it is easy to get turned around.

I have also been enjoying your blog posts and I wanted to ask: finding good reading sources in English on this time period is kinda tricky. If you have any favorite texts that would help me understand the background to this game, or especially the Imjin War, I would love recommendations!

While we are on the subject on Chiksan, can anyone explain why it is considered a Japanese Victory in-game? Wikipedia seems to say it is a Ming strategic Victory. I don't know anything about the battle, but wikipedia (sorry) seems to have it that a small Ming force beat a small Japanese force, then successfully withdrew before a superior force. To me that seems a pretty good outcome for Ming. Can someone fill me in on the actual historical details, and what is wrong with the entry?

Allies would consider this a victory because the Japanese advance to Seoul was halted. It was indeed the turning point of the second invasion. The allies also performed well right before Mori came. But at the end of the day, Japanese ended up holding the ground as the Ming retreated despite their earlier advantage and good performance. So I would say it's a small victory for the Japanese as they took the ground at the end of the day (2 days actually) but a strategic defeat as they realised they can no longer take Seoul. Everything went downhill afterwards.
