I've left out all the steps but basically:
1) Cut two or three layers of thin styrofoam into the levels of a hill (all edges nice and smooth, no steps). Make sure the ground level edges are very gently sloped so those Roman heavies or pike phalanxes trying to charge up don't topple over! A couple of my examples further down have slightly bulky ground edges.
2) Glue the layers together (like a styrofoam cake) using ye olde white glue in copious amounts. Let dry.
3) Cover hill with copious amounts of polyfilla (that goopy stuff used in drywalling)(whatever you dudes might call it on the other side of the pond!). Let dry.
4) Cover hill with copious amounts of ye olde white glue and then flock with suitable shade of green. Let dry.
5) Dribble small amounts of white glue in very creative lines/shapes and add on the rough flock (coarse turf green/brown)(earthy shades for bits of gullies or rough patches). Let dry.
6) Tempt Roman heavies up slope (won't say how!).
Some examples:
(Above) Rough hill (normal size) with brush covering. Denies the other player gentle open hills and gets your rough ground at the same time!
Same as first.
Rough hill with plantation (though could also be a vineyard...was probably what my brain was thinking of while making it).
Rough (brush) large compulsory piece (made from one layer of styrofoam, classed as ground level, not a hill.
