Snipers and beach defense

Post by jlkuro99 »

I have run into an issue in playing a game. My opponent has sniper units defending beach hexes. Snipers are a hit and run or hide type unit. They were not meant for the defense of beach hexes. I think it is totally unrealistic that a sniper unit can prevent a full size unit from landing on a beach. I think you need to change the mechanics such that if a sniper is defending a beach and an Allied unit is landing on that hex the sniper automatically retreats a hex. I don't think the actual combatants in WWII let a lowly sniper stop them from landing on a beach!

1 lone sniper can hold up an whole army tbh, it's all about fear and happens even today on battle fields all over the world, used to be mines, while these still are as bad, nothing is more to you if you hear something but can't see it, that's long range snipers, duck and cover, but doesn't effect tanks

I'm sorry but you don't know what you are talking about regarding snipers. My father was a ball gunner on a B-24 in WWII. He was wounded over Munich. My sister married a man our parents age. He faked his age and enlisted in the Marines when he was just 17 in WWII. He went through, if my memory serves me, 7 invasions in the South Pacific. I believe he was in the Gilberts and Marshalls invasions however I would have to check with his son to see if he knows what invasions his father was in action. The main objective was to get on the beach since a group of men in a landing craft are just sitting ducks for machine guns and snipers. He saw men shredded by machine guns. He told me one time he was sitting in a fox hole and a guy's lower jaw just disappeared. I don't think some snipers would have prevented them from getting on the beach. After seven invasions, getting wounded and realizing that over half the guys he started out seven invasions previous were dead or wounded he got into OCS and ended the war working on the invasion plans for Japan.
