Terrain Colors - All or Just for Snow?
Re: Terrain Colors - All or Just for Snow?
I purchased this title, but put me down as a hater of the tile colours too. Hard on the eyes! Hoping for an option to more realistic tile colouring in future update.

I use two flat panel monitors. Either one of them would still give a glaring effect.jomni wrote:Everyone was shocked with the paper ground tiles including myself. But it grew on me and made sense.
The effect kinda varies by monitor brand and setup.
I will just wait for the terrain mod before I buy.
Re: Terrain Colors - All or Just for Snow?
what operating system do you use?Old_Warrior
as you maybe able to alter the contrast the same as you can on most modern monitors to suit without modding

Well honestly, I really dont like the look. along with the glare.
I use XP ... I wont be adjusting the contrast just for one game. I already have to turn off dual monitors to get Pike and Shot to run. Kind of a nuisance. This is an older XP64 box but the look of the game would be the same on my newer PC (which is down for the count at the moment).

Just an idea to possibly solve the problem, or for those like me who would prefer to see the Pike and Shot colours in the game. Would it be possible to copy and paste the bases and overlays from Pike and Shot into this game, although keep the objects which I think we all want to see ?

I was thinking the same thing .... copy them and rename them if needed to match the counterpart terrain type. There are a lot of terrain pieces and so on but once done well there you have it

Copy and pasted southern europe Base and Overlay. Tried in the Skirmish mode but the terrain and roads are very sparse. I have not much idea when it comes to modding, so I think I'll wait for the Devs to come up with a solution. Obviously not everyone who buys the game also has Pike and Shot. So if the Devs come up with something....It should be for everyone, or everyone who has trouble making things out on this beige background. I know I have trouble seeing the little arrows indicating a unit is in Melee. Also the movement tiles. Also the writing. Being white doesnt show up well on a light background. Anyway here's hoping an easy solution can be found.

Know it will not change other opinions but just another like - from some old eyes - for the look.
I do like the difference from P&S and a thumbs up to the graphic designer(s) for the overall contextual feel.

Re: Terrain Colors - All or Just for Snow?
The gorgeous graphics of the Battle Academy game got me interested in designing for Slith ... hence my work on the Metz module ...
When I saw Pike and Shot I nearly jumped out of my seat. Really loved the look of the game.
Field of Glory also has nice graphics but BA and P&S are my favs so far.
Thus that is why I made this post to begin with. I think when you have a winning look to a game you stick with it. But that is just how I feel.
I also have been worked on 7 other games where the graphics get heavily critiqued. So frankly graphics mean a lot and its important to sample to a wide audience your ideas if you decide to do something drastically different.
This coming from a guy who played "Eastern Front" on his Atari 800
(anyone remember that game?)

There you go!
A true classic in computer wargaming I enjoyed it more than most of the wargames that came out during that time. In fact there were times when the Russians would overwhelm the Germans!
Thanks for posting a screenshot of one of my old favorites!
A side note: I got to hear Jim Dunnigan of SPI fame speak at UCLA in 1977 or 78 on the future of computer wargaming. Its amazing how close his predictions have come true.
The computer does handle the rules, fog of war, die rolls, large map games not taking up the dinning room table, etc very well ... the shortcomings that he outlined still plague us. Things like player interaction with moving units (counter charges etc) and other areas of wargaming that the computer cannot simulate as well as a miniatures/boardgame can.
But I will take computer gaming any day. As I get older the idea of setting up a monster game of Wacht am Rhein is not my cup of tea.

Ok Ok - you convinced me ... the new Japanese pike and shot game graphics look fantastic!
That is one thing I dont miss from the past ... dorky looking graphics

Re: Terrain Colors - All or Just for Snow?
Well I told you that.
Graphs are just not readable enough in this game, is a pain to play it.
Terrain look and lack of pike blocks with invisible spears making all hard to see.

Re: Terrain Colors - All or Just for Snow?
In an aesthetic sense I rather like the look, but I have to admit that I find it more difficult on the eyes than P&S has been.
Mostly though I'm still just 'over the moon' (to use a football cliche) that we've got such a terrific game covering this period and theatre of war - if I lose what remains of my eyesight, so be it...

Bought the game and gone through first tutorial so far. Good feel but the stark light coloring of the terrain isa good option but really needs the P&S color matte as well. Looking forward to non 4am play!

Re: Terrain Colors - All or Just for Snow?
Well, there is a saying in Spanish equivalent to "Everyone to his own taste" or "To each his own" which is "Para gustos, los colores", which roughly (and properly in this case) translates "there is a colour for each taste".
I was planning to congratulate the art director of this game, and I just thought probably this is the right thread.
I really love the feel & look of this game. I consider it one of the best I've seen lately. I often wonder why this is an aspect many developers seem not to pay enough care. For me, one of the critical factors in a game is about taking the players to the particular time and environment where action is taking place. I started loving this game at first look, even before knowing anything about its mechanics, which btw I'm finding out are great too!
I never thought there was snow in the battlefields. And I'm not young any more. I use glasses. I spent most of my days working in front of a computer screen, but I did not experience any problem so far. I'm not saying people who complains is not right to ask for a solution if possible. I hope some mods will do, but in my case, I will remain playing with these wonderful terrain colors.
