Last time I played I got nuked by Gandhi, I thought he be peaceful. Lost early city to Indian dog soldiers. Then the Japanese samurai paid visit I lost my general. Sometimes AI can be way aggressive. But I end up none stop playing, waiting see what happens next.
Ghandi had a glitch in civ 2 where his "will to use nukes" setting was put very low. Sometimes he would choose Democracy as a government, forcing it down one or two points more. This would cause the setting to go to -1, or in binary, the maximum possible (in those days, 255). Meaning he actually REALLY wants to use them. The devs have since set Ghandi's nuke use setting quite high as a continuation of this joke.
Usually when I play I have to rush-build an army to fight off an AI attack around 1000ad, then I invade the guys on my island. Then I get to the Industrial Age and spam factories and infantry. After that, I am so much more powerful than all the others (I can out-build, out-tech, out-strategy all of them). Often I win around the point I get tanks. If that doesn't happen, beeline the Internet (gives you dozens of free tech), and then beeline nukes. Nuke the hell out of everyone.
The next time I get nuked will be the first time: if I see an AI more than one or two tiers of tech ahead I usually quit - it is too difficult to catch up and overtake someone unless you are vastly bigger than them, and often such difficult obstacles own half the map.

Answers 1892 AD you beat me by 2 years. I used samurai and musketeers to quickly kill of half the world early. On an island I finished by 1895 slightly slower as times hard gauge the others when not in contact.
I didn't know that about Gandhi in Civ2 explains why I got nuked, I thought he be peaceful so didn't pay him to much attention, used him get some tech exchanges, silly me haha.
With dog soldiers, its possible to kill lots civs early but I never tried it.
Have you tried Civ5, I heard from some lots good comments, others complain about it?
Generally I skip over muskets: I use macemen while I'm researching gunpowder, and then pretty quickly I have rifling so I just upgrade. Easier than building another 20 guys!
I've played Civ 5 as well, I'm in the complain about it category. Religion is too nation-specific. Caravans are just micromanaging a simple (in IV) concept. Government has become "pick a bonus, any bonus" rather than an actual decision. Half of the UUs are overpowered (Venice Merchant, Impi, Battering Ram, Keshik, etc.). Somehow I still sunk 150hrs into that game, but Civ IV is still better IMO.
I saw online once that someone won a huge map on Deity sometime around 1200 AD. They probably did it on Marathon (x3 turns), but we have to figure out how to beat that!

Well try the dog soldiers and do fast tech to use horses, should be able clear well before 1200 AD. I go for removing as many as possible very very early, then hit tech to get ahead, but island game will make that hard. If you can steal couple cities early should speed things up.
Thanks for telling me about Civ5 I give it miss, I am old school started with older games, like way things done Civ4 and Civ3.
I say clamp some sheet steel on sides but it probably become unmovable.
