Questions about exit points

Post by Ichthyic »

I'm on the 6th map for the US marines campaign, and there are 2 different types of exit points in the middle of the ocean, neither of which are explained in game.

the first is a green exit arrow, that points upwards.

the second is a blue exit arrow with a box attached, that points to the left.

My guess is that the green exit arrows are for any aircraft or troop transports you want to exit the field? Are these what I would use to "send my aircraft back to home base" for repairs and refueling?

and the blue is for? haven't got a clue on that. can't recall ever seeing it before.

The colors should indicate the side they are used for, so should match the colors of the player or a certain AI side (which, depending on scenario, could be allied the the player or opposing)

What about the other difference? I remember something about one type returning the unit to reserves in the next turn, and the other only in the next scenario (permanent evacuation, kinda).

I also noticed that exit-hexes not always returning units what is a great pity if you send planes to them. I think they should always return-to-base, as exchanging units, like either bombers or fighters, can be very useful in some missions. It's also needed if you run out of resources and like to swap damaged units for healthy ones.

well, blue is certainly not the japanese, so i'm guessing it's for american allies?

also, not just different colors, but entirely different icons as well. having now finished the map, I think the arrows indicate the direction of travel and exit for american forces not under your direct control?

again, just guessing.

also unclear as to whether the green exit arrows allow for aircraft to be put back into the fight after 1 turn delay, like on the other maps.

I chose not to use them because I was unsure, and just fought to get a couple of airfields under control on the lower island instead.

OFten one Ally is controled by the AI, there may be exit points specifically for this player. Usually to move units off the map at a specific location (supply ships in naval scenarios for example).
The designer can set if the exit point allow returns to the map, this is usually done for air units (simulating off-map AFs).
But I think it was also used in the Jap Java scenario for ships allowing off-map naval repair.
I can't remember if the player is able to see if the unit may return or not. I would hope so...

I should check the editor more often. The types of exit are shown below. I guess the simple exits are uninteresting for the player, as usually only AI controlled units can retreat there by mission trigger.
The only bummer left is that the mapper can restrict theses exists for only ground, naval, and/or air units without visual feedback, so players hardly know if redeploys also work for air units. I only hope there will never be an exception for plane fuel’s sake.

So only an indication of the unit type (if restricted) is missing at the moment.

In the editor the unit type is displayed if only one is selected.
For 2-3 unit types there is a common symbol.

I think the blue exit areas are for the blue AI controlled units, though on some scenarios they just disappear at a certain time.
