Priestes in Rome?

Post by IainMcNeil »

Hi guys,

looking for a bit of hsitorical knowledge here :)

During the reign of Commodus 180-192AD would it have been possible to have a Roman priestess at a temple? Did it depend on who the temple was dedicted to?

Thanks!

Isis, although an Egyptian cult, was also popular in Rome and had priestesses. Roman religion wasn't limited to the traditional pantheon of twelve Gods (Jupiter, Mars, Venus...etc) but ìncluded hundreds of minor deities representing nature and natural phenomenons not to mention the gods of its subject peoples. A fair number of the latter cults were probably run by women.
