Battlefield Europe - Operation Barbarossa (Field Marshall)

Post by GeneralWerner »

Brief AAR
Difficulty: Field Marshall

Targets:
Priority one: Defeat the Soviet Union
Priority two: Hold back the Western Allies in the air battle in France and in the sea battle in the Atlantic
Priority three: Capture Malta, gain and hold the naval superiority in the central Mediterranean Sea, capture and hold huge parts of North Afrika

The plan

Soviet Union:
We are prioritizing Heeresgruppe Mitte on the forced march to Moscow. Moscow should be captured before end of 1941.
In the north the Finnish will start to attack Leningrad, weakening the defence until Heeregruppe Nord will encircle the city from the south. It is planned to capture Leningrad in 1942.
In the south Heeresgruppe Süd will approach east, capturing Odessa, the Crimea and finally reaching the gates of the Caucasus in 1942.

Western Front
The Kriegsmarine, will disrupt the Atlantic shipping lanes with submarines and strategic bombers. We will repair our Atlantic fleet and transfer the core of our North Sea fleet through the English Channel to the Atlantic.
In France we will deploy several Flak stations and modern fighter squads to prevent the British to get the air superiority in France.

Mediterranean Battlefield
Malta will be captured by destroying the strong fort with tactical bombing in combination with a wide range artillery from Sicily. If necessary we will transfer our best Stuka bomber pilot Rudel from the eastern front to Malta in winter 41/42 to speed up the destruction of the British defense.
The Italian Navy and Airforce will clean the sea between Tunis in the west and Tobruk in the east from British vessels.
Rommel’s Afrika Korps has to repel the upcoming strong British counter attack. If possible Tobruk should be captured later. An attack an Egypt is currently not planned.
Order of battle in June 1941: Red - Attacking / Blue - Defending / Yellow - Naval Moves

JUNE 41 - JUNE 42

WEST FRONT

August 41. We deployed several Flak stations at the English Channel to cover the move of our North Sea Fleet (waiting near Amsterdam) through the channel to the Atlantic. Due to the British sea mines north of Dunkirk every ship moving in this area of the sea will come under fire from the British heavy cruiser HMS London. The OKW decided to start operation "Isar" with the goal to sink the HMS London and the protecting destroyers before our fleet is crossing the channel.

November 41. While the fleet is still waiting near Amsterdam our best U-Boot-Flotille is sneaking in the British mine fields. In the meantime three of our fighter squads fight the British Bombers and fighters in France.

December 41. The decisive blow of operation "Isar" was successful. Our fleet entered the channel quickly and sunk the British destroyer fleet with a quick but heavy bombardment. This made the way free for our U-Boote to reach and attack the HMS London. The fleet went back to Amsterdam to wait until the U-Boote have finished their work.

JUNE 41 - JUNE 42

MEDITERRANEAN SEA AND NORTH AFRICA

August 41. The combined Italian fleet is moving east to challenge the Royal Navy ships. From the Airport of Sicily the bombing of Malta has started. Our Fallschirmjäger from Crete are transfered to the Afrika Korps to support Rommel. The Afrika Korps has entered a defence Position near Benghazi facing the attacking British tanks.

April 42. The bombing of the Italian tactical bombers has left the fort of Malta nearly unharmed. Thus the OKW has decided to set up a wide range 17 cm artillery in Sicily to continuously bombard Malta. In parallel the German hero Rudel was ordered from the east front to Italy to provide the decisive blows with his Stukas against the fort. Rudel's bomber squad will arrive in May.

April 42. Near Benghazi the British Crusader counter attack was stopped and defeated. Rommel ordered to go to attack to finish the rest of the distracted British armies. A strong attack on Tobruk from the west has started.

JUNE 41 - JUNE 42

BARBAROSSA

August 41. The surprising attack on the Soviet Union was a big success. The whole Russian Airforce near the front line was destroyed in the first days providing air supremacy for the Axis powers. Heeresgruppe Mitte started a forced march in direction of Moscow. The upcoming battle of Smolensk where the Russians have set up a strong defense point will decide whether the Wehrmacht can reach Moscow in time. Thus Smolensk has to be taken quickly while the Panzerspitzen have to bypass the city in the south. The approach in the central and southern front segment is slower.
4108_east.jpg
4108_east.jpg (147 KiB) Viewed 7506 times
November 41. Smolensk was overrun and the Wehrmacht has reached the gates of Moscow. In the central front line we try to close the Kiev pocket. The OKW has realised that the Red Army has a tank model T34 that is clearly superior to all our Wehrmacht tanks. If the Russians can send multiple divisions of these tanks in the battle it will be a great risk for the whole operation Barbarossa. The German war industry is ordered to develop new tank models with longer main gun and better armour as soon as possible. The OKW has changed our battle doctrine. Tank battles with T34s have to be avoided. The T34s have to be lured in close terrain and will be attacked by infantry, anti tank and tactical bombers first.

January 42. Moscow in the German hands. The Red Army started a winter offensive on the whole front line including several T34 divisions. The Wehrmacht has taken entrenched positions and went to defense. Still the new tank models are missing.

April 42. The main order for the next weeks is to straighten the Axis front line by advancing in the north to Leningrad and in the very south to Rostov. In the centre Kursk is the next important target. In the meantime a new tank model Panzer IIIJ/1 was taken in service. This model has a chance against the T34 but still it is inferior. The industry is working on a new Panzer IV model that should close the gap to the T34.

January 1943. The OKW has sent all 88er Flak stations from the English Channel to the east to support our anti tank defense against the Russian winter offensive. Begin of 43 the allied activities on the convoy lanes are strengthend. The resistence of the British and American destroyers against our U-Boote is intensified. The OKW has decided not to sacrifice our submarine fleet and withdraw them in time to France.

January 1943. The Allies send in a strong battlefleet with three powerful battle cruisers supported by heavy cruisers, destroyers, submarines and air force. The Italians struggle to stop this fleet. There are heavy losses on both sides. In the meantime the German Fallschirmjägers entrench at the Kasserine pass to slow down the American approach. This time is urgently needed to set up a defense line near Tunis where the first Axis enforcements are landing at the beaches and at the airport.

April 1943. The American fleet is nearly defeated. The defense line at Tunis is taking shape. Rommel decided to use his Panzer IIIL division to defend the city of Annaba. The Americans drive out the Fallschirmjägers from the Kasserine pass opening the way for the American armour to move to Tunis. Due to heavy fighting in the Medditerranen Sea and on the whole east front in combination with Allied bombing raids in Germany the OKW suffers of a lack of prestige. It is not possible anymore to repair all damaged units.

November 1942. The Axis is preparing for the winter attack of the Red Army. Intelligence report about a huge number of Russian tank divisions that will be set on march to the west soon. The OKW has decided where the main defense line (blue) will be set up. All divisions east of this line are retreating to safe entrenched positions. The OKW expects the main counter attack in the very south at our open flank in the Rostov area. After the freezing of the rivers the Red Army will try to crush the Rostov bridgehead. Heeresgruppe Nord has captured Leningrad. The whole front segment will stay on attack with the goal to reach the Volga River in spring 43.

The east front consists of (the units marked with * build the main defense core aginst the upcoming Russian attack):
* infantry: 88 divisions (one unit on the map represents two divisions)
light tanks: 5 divisions
* Panzer IIIJ/1: 5 divisions
* Panzer IVG: 2 divisions
artillery: 15 divisions
* anti tank PAK: 4 divisions
* 88 Flak: 6 divisions
* Stug III/8: 6 divisions
recon: 4 divisions
Flam Panzer: 3 divisions

April 1943. The situation in the Rostov bridgehead is stable after we have sent in strong Panzer and anti tank divisions. The huge amount of Russian ressources allowed the Red Army to start another strong attack in the Kursk area. Our stable defense setup in this area leads to a tough battle of attrition but the OKW rates that the Russian forces will not be strong enough to break through.

While Heeresgruppe Nord was in the offensive the whole winter it is planned for Heeresgruppe Mitte and Heeresgruppe Süd to go back to offensive immediately after the Russian attack is falling apart.

JUNE 42 - JUNE 43

GLOBAL
Red/Blue: Current main battlefields/front lines: Atlantic, Tunisia, Russia
Yellow: Front line in June 41 at the begin of Barbarossa.
Green: Front line in June 42. The huge territorial gains of the first year of Barbarossa could not be repeated due to the increasing resistence of the Red Army. If the Wehrmacht can reach its targets of the upcoming summer 43 offensive (reaching Stalingrad, crossing the Don River, moving east along the Volga River) the OKW expects to end the war in the east in 1944.
Grey: The western Allies move from two sides to Tunisia. The Italians are using some destroyer units to control the coastal road from Tobruk to Tunis to slow down the British. The Americans have already reached Rommel's defense line in Tunisia. Rommel's plan is to defeat the Americans before the British reach the battlefields.

JUNE 1943 – JUNE 1944

WEST FRONT

June 1943. The OKW has decided to call back all our submarines from the convoy lanes due to increased Allied destroyer activities. Our repaired surface fleet is hiding from RAF planes near the Spanish coast.
4306_west.jpg
4306_west.jpg (176.11 KiB) Viewed 7252 times
September 1943. The British start to bomb German cities. We have left only one fighter squad and some few Flaks in the west. In the Atlantic harbors our submarines are repaired and resupplied.

November 1943. The first snow is giving our fighters a pause in the never ending struggle against Allied bomber forces. We repair our submarine flottilles.

February 1944. Intelligence warns OKW about an upcoming invasion in Western Europe in spring/summer 44. Thus we have sent in three U-Boot flottilles in the eastern and three in the western part of the English Channel. Also our surface fleets are preparing to move.

April 1944. The huge invasion of the Allies is Western Europe must happen soon. Feldmarschall Rommel has taken over the defense of Western Europe. The strategy: As the OKW could not find out where exactly the invasion will happen we expect not to be able to stop the first wave from landing. With our U-Boote and surface fleet in combination with strategic bombers we plan to stop the second, and all following waves. The isolated Allied divisions of the first invasion wave will then be hunted down by our armies. Our U-Boote are already in position (yellow). Additional four flottilles will enter the English Channel soon (orange). Also our Atlantic fleet moves north to be able to reach the English Channel quickly. Our bomber fleets from the Mediterranean theater will reach France in the next days. The land forces from the Afrika Korps have reached Italy and will soon be transported to France and western Germany. Also from the eastern front several strong divisions were set to march and have already reached Poland on their way west. We expect heavy losses against the Allied Airforce and Allied Navy. But it has highest priority to sink as many Allied transport convoys as possible before they can reach the beaches.

JUNE 1943 – JUNE 1944

MEDITERRANEAN SEA and NORTH AFRICA

June 1943. The defense line in Tunisia is set up. The Americans try to break through from the west. The British are approaching quickly from the east and have reached Tripoli (yellow). Rommel has decided to strengthen his southern flank at Gabes with infantry against the upcoming British attack.

September 1943. The defense against the American troops is stable. But the British have broken the defense of Gabes with heavy armour. Rommel will try to slow them down with infantry while his upgraded Panzer division – the first Panther division of the whole Wehrmacht – is moving south (yellow) to stop the British armour. The British seem to have no naval and no air support. Thus the Italian Airforce and Navy will strike against them, too.

February 1944. Victory in Tunisia. The Americans were defeated and our troops start to move west. In southern Tunisia the British tank armies were destroyed and the Axis troops are quickly moving east to recapture all the areas that were lost until September 43. JUNE 1943 – JUNE 1944

BARBAROSSA

June 1943. Our main front line in the east was ordered to go to attack. In the very north Heeresgruppe Nord is moving north to Archangelsk. East from Moscow our troops try to encircle the defenders of Gorky. In the center the Wehrmacht has crossed the Don River to capture the strongly defended city of Lipetsk. In the south Heeresgruppe Süd is marching east to Stalingrad. If we can capture and hold Gorky, Lipetsk and Stalingrad until spring 44 the OKW is very confident to defeat the Russians until summer 44.

September 1943. In the very north Heeresgruppe Nord is moving quickly to Archangelsk. North of Gorky our light tanks were surprised by strong SU 152 and T34/43 tank divisions. We had to stop our attack and to transfer two Panzer IIIM divisions and one StuG IIIB division in this area to stop the Russian tanks. Surprisingly Russian paratroopers landed near Moscow. In the center the Wehrmacht has captured the city of Lipetsk now destroying the remaining Red Army divisions in this area and preparing the next strike to the east. In the south Heeresgruppe Süd is marching east to Stalingrad leaded by our Tiger Panzer division.

November 1943. We reached the borders of Archangelsk in the very north. After the fall of Gorky our troops start now to rush east to reach Ulyanovsk. In the center Heeresgruppe Mitte has completely crossed the Don River moving east. Stalingrad is attacked from the north. The OKW expects another strong Russian winter attack with many tank divisions but our front line is short and very compact now. The terrain includes a lot of forests where infantry can stop the enemy armour. Modern Stug IIIGs, our well performing 88er anti tank weapon and our Panther tanks have the necessary defensive and offensive fire power to fight back the Red Army in the next snowy months.
