Terrain Size, Table Size, & Battle Lines

Post by Blathergut »

A trio of questions to the souls out there who have been playing:

1) 25mm Games & Terrain Size

It has been mentioned in some posts that some have a problem/concern with terrain 'not working' for 25mm. We've been playing here with 4'x6' table and 25mmMU and normal terrain and I've found no concern. Could someone explain the concern? Am curious how others find the same situation differently.

2) & 3) Table Size and Second Lines

From most of the photos posted, it seems few try to keep an actual second line of rear support troops...the temptation seems to be to pull those troops out into the front line on the flanks to have more troops there and hopefully overwhelm an opponent long before any such troops would actually end up fighting in a rear support/save mode. Again, curious if any out there are actually trying to keep those 2nd line BG there and if they DO eventually prove their worth once the front BGs deteriorate. Maybe certain armies? (gauls, spaniards, etc?)

On this side of the Pond, amongst more matured, wargamers......private tables are more likely to be 4 by 8 foot in size. Heck, many indie stores I've been in had/have 4 by 8 tables not 4 by 6.That by itself will cause armchair generals to use what could be "support troops" to fill out and protect flanks on the front line.

IMHO, at least when using starter armies......IF played on a 4 by 6 portion of a 4 by 8 table, we might be more likely to hold a reserve, to have support units.

Speaking for myself and the other old fart opponents.....We haven't gotten that far yet. We are still adjusting to the difference in terrain placement. (NOT a complaint....we do like the FOW way of placing it  )
