High CPU usage after 2.3.8 patch

Post by cfaulkner »

Had the game for a few weeks now, like it very much.

After d/l the 2.3.8 patch today, I started the game to continue my campaign. At first I noticed that it was taking an unusually long time for the ai to complete its turn.( I notice that a few posts have been made about this today). Then I also noticed that my CPU fan was screaming. Checking the CPU monitor I found that my CPU is running at 100% while the ai turn is in progress .

Never did this before, and I've run a number of other programs to make sure there wasn't an issue with my machine.Everything seems normal.

I'm running windows 8.1 with a 3.6 Ghz i7 CPU. 16 GB of ram, GTX970 vid card.

i have one of the same spec pc's as a test machine, with different results, lets take a look and how many processors have you got running in the back ground? as the report below won't show that, just ctr alt del and take a look and report the number thanks...

mines windows 10, so have 3 apps running atm, 17 background apps, and 26 processors running, which gives a 1% cpu use and 8% memory use without any game being used, so it's not uncommon for a spike to 100% but shouldn't be running at that all the time either

How to get a DxDiag report file:

1. Click on "START" (on Windows 8 press “Windows key” and the “R” key at the same time)
2. Click "run" (skip this step on Windows 8 )
3. Type in "dxdiag" and click "OK"
4. Check through the tabs and perform all tests
5. Click "Save all Information..." and save the text file to a location of your choice

We prefer that DxDiag files be posted as message attachments (zip) rather than pasted into the body of the post.

add the exe of the game to your Anti Virus and firewall program, to make sure check the logs of these to see if it was one if any of them was to blame.

That usually means a 3rd party program, like an Internet security programs, is or could be interfering with the game or update installation.

run the game from a admin account and use full admin permissions.

please make sure all game pre requisite are installed with the game, even if you think or fully know there are already installed, it will only over write, and it may be that you have a older or newer version of these where as the game in question may need a certain version.

please make sure you are running the latest game version and have up to date drivers installed on your pc,

If you have the original version. So you'll need to update it from the Internet.
Please note that you'll only need the last update, as the updates are comprehensive. (not needed with steam)

Which scenario are you currently playing? Can you send us a savegame (zip & attach to forum post)?

I also exhibited a similar situation on Steam playing Scenaro 2 of the Bootcamp. The GPU fan was whirring, some slowdown was experienced, and at the conclusion of the scenario a distintive distortion in the music. I did play the first two Bootcamp scenarios without exiting out of the program.

With 4 apps, 42 background and 23 windows processes running I'm at 2% CPU usage and 12% mem.

dxdiag. file is attached

Checked game again to see if same result, yes. 100% CPU usage when ai is running. However, I went back and tried some smaller scenarios,(Boot camp, and the BoB mod), didn't get near the same CPU usage. There were some spikes,45-53% as the scenarios got larger, but nothing sustained and little or no "hanging" of the turn. I then tried the Betio Island scenario and again,100% usage with long hang times for the ai turn.

After I d/l the 2.3.8 patch,I was just starting the Okinawa scenario which is rather large. It may be coincidence that I noticed this then, and not be the patch at all. Still,I need to find out why this is happening if I want to continue to enjoy the game.

@adherbal... I have 2 save games that I could attach, but one is just the start of the scenario with nothing deployed, the other is a test I did where I just deployed everything on the map helter- skelter to see if I was still having the problem. If you want either or both of them let me know. I'll send em.

System DPI Setting: 144 DPI (150 percent) default is 100%

Driver Date/Size: 12/13/2014 06:08:08, 17264312 bytes (so rather old and out of date) video

Code: Select all

http://www.geforce.co.uk/drivers
for latest version

Date and Size: 6/10/2014 20:27:34, 3996888 bytes (audio)

nearly all error's in report are windows update errors

WindowsUpdateFailure3

with only 2 from other, none game related.

my advice is if the rest of your drivers are as old as these 2 mentioned, you are loosing a lot to this, alter what you have running in the background after fixing the drivers and keep the pc updated to latest version, system / motherboard devices / drivers are as important as AV and firewalls, if all are as old, this will give a performance loss, but not to this extent either.

how old is the windows installation?

as tbh you maybe ready for a reinstall if newer driver don't fix it for you, over time the system gets slower and less responsive and performance lost can't be gained but driver updates alone, pc spec is fine hardware wise, so imo if driver updates dont work, back up and reinstall windows and see the performance leap you will get, not only with later drivers, but a cleaner and faster machine, good luck

ok I did update the vid driver, the realtek audio driver is the latest one.( according to the motherboard manufacturer) Did nothing to help the issue,I honestly didn't expect it to tho.The windows install is just over a year old. (Jan.2015)

Installed the game on another PC running windows7. loaded up the Betio island scenario to run a test and got the same results. During the ai turn, CPU usage ran up to 100% and temps in all 4 cores got really high,(and I mean REALLY high). Not sure what causing it but I'm going to have to shelf the game untill I can get it worked out.I can afford another game or two, but can't really afford a fried CPU.

I'm pretty bummed out by this. I was really enjoying the game and was looking forward to the USMC mod .

Thx for the help.

ok, seems to developer needs to look at this now and see where the common ground is, as there's enough members with issues and reports and saves uploaded now, thanks for the report and sorry for the issues
