The future of FoG
Let's say FoG Unity is out. Does it mean that the old version will be kicked out from the PBEM+ server or it will be incompatybile with the new one?
Are there any plans about releasing FoG Unity version for Linux (it is Unity Engine after all)?
Let's say FoG Unity is never realeased. Does it mean that the old FoG can be someday kick out from the PBEM+ server, because it is too old or the number of players is too small, or the game is not paying for itself anymore, or for any reason?

Re: The future of FoG
There's a third option:
Let's say FoG(U) WILL be released, but with the release date never set, and whenever it looks like it's about to get released -it's NOT; will anyone give a damn when it finally (after years and years...) is?

Re: The future of FoG
I'll give a damn, Voskarp. Not because I play it any more, which I don't (on account of the lousy AI); rather because it's the longest running saga since the period of history it's supposed to cover ;o)
Cheers,

this is one of the biggest screw-ups in game publishing history. legendary stuff. never try to fix something that is not broken.

There's also the assumption that when the mythical beast is finally born it will come out beautiful and unblemished.

So no one knows anything and the publisher remains silent?

Sadly that pretty much covers it, yes. Every so often somebody will emerge to tell us it's ready, but it never is.

I was hoping for an Easter present. It would have been fitting ... with the rising from the grave theme ...
There must have been some major issues uncovered late in the process for it to be delayed this long after the almost release?

One does not know. A little news from Slitherine would be nice.

Re: The future of FoG
Just bought and installed the Field of Glory series from Slitherine with the army packs. I'm impressed by the quality of the old game. It still looks and plays very smooth on my system.
As a experiment I downloaded also the current beta for the new version (FoG(U)_2016.02.12_01s_v2.4.01.1030_GM1d(mod)_beta_(Win), and I can play and register my serials for the game which is great.
But all units and terrain looks very pixelated compared to the original version. Is it something that is not complete yet because it's beta?
I wonder this because otherwise it should be a huge downgrade graphical wise.
I'm on a Windows 10 system with an AMD R7 radeon 2GB card.

I understand that the Unity engine will enable this .... so we wait .....Terrement wrote:Have also been told for a very long time that it would be iPad capable...

Re: The future of FoG
So the change of engine is to make the game work on tablets or it is going to introduce gameplay changes?

Unity makes the existing application portable across many platforms. Unchanged I would say.Rom1944 wrote:So the change of engine is to make the game work on tablets or it is going to introduce gameplay changes?

Re: The future of FoG
Right now, the only thing I know is that since moving up to the top of the section of New Releases the game has dropped to number 7 now without actually having been released...
Re: The future of FoG
I'd love to see something like FOG with the more elegant pike and shot engine
Re: The future of FoG
except that it's not more elegant. and i like to watch painted figurines more than rectangular prisms.Vargas78 wrote:I'd love to see something like FOG with the more elegant pike and shot engine

Re: The future of FoG
Right now it feels a damned sight more elegant. I know what you mean about the painted miniatures though. It does bridge the gap to tabletop gaming better than any other computer wargame I can think of, but at least I'm playing Pike and Shot on a regular basis. FoG either needs some focus at Slitherine or they concede it's a failed project and move on. This half-way house has gone on long enough.
Re: The future of FoG
Admittedly the 3d aspect of the graphics wasn't really what i was getting at, i should have specified that better. Rather my point is aimed against the hex based system. The tabletop of FOG wasn't actually hex based and i think the octagonal based grid of pike and shot would adapt just as well and make the units and armies look more elegant as the hexes make the FOG formations fall into zig-zag like patterns and thus make it look a bit ugly.fogman wrote:except that it's not more elegant. and i like to watch painted figurines more than rectangular prisms.Vargas78 wrote:I'd love to see something like FOG with the more elegant pike and shot engine
Re: The future of FoG
well I find the gameplay more fluid and engrossing in FoG than P&S. Being old school, hex beats everything else. I played a lot of P&S for a while, even writing 6 scenarios for it (it's a lot of labour to write a scenario for P&S). Works really well for 17th century, but rather awful for Italian wars. FoG digital is a superior system for representing pre-modern warfare, irrespective of what the tabletop version is. Since the 17th century is only of limited interest to me, I haven't touched P&S in months. I have played FoG non stop for 6 years! it's how good it is. In truth I don't care about how long the Unity version is taking, I'm perfectly happy with the RB version.
