extra 45 degree turn during movement

extra 45 degree turn during movement

Is it my imagination or am I getting an extra 45 degree turn during movement when I am distant from any enemy units? I am pretty sure that is happening.

Anybody notice how close you need to be to enemy troops to lose that extra 45 degree turn? Maybe I missed it but I don't recall any mention in the manual.

Finally moved on from Italian Wars and War of the Roses to the Religious wars of the second half of the 1500s. Infantry firepower is far more powerful than early 1500s. The game clearly shows the increasing role of both firepower and infantry. Also black reiters have shown up! Although I miss the Huguenot Millers in their white cassocks. Has anyone done a mod for them?

All units always get one free 45 degree turn during movement. If the angle between the vectors of the overall move made and a straight ahead move is less than 45 degrees (even if the facing changes by 45 degrees) this does not count as the free 45 degree turn, so you can still turn 45 degrees at the end of the move. An example would be a "knight's move" type of move, which would not count as a 45 degree turn even if the facing changes by 45 degrees, because the overall vector between the move from start position to end position is less than 45 degrees from the straight ahead vector. If you don't get a free 45 turn at the end of such a move when you are close to enemy it is probably because of the ZOC/Priority target rules.

Apologies for getting into a discussion of vectors, but this is how the logic works. We think it is more realistic than simply taking into account changes of facing when a unit moves. If you think of it in terms of wheeling, even though the end facing is the same, the unit that moves a "knight's move" and hence counts as not having used its free 45 degree turn has wheeled less steeply (because the change of facing is treated as having occurred gradually over the whole length of the move) than a unit which simply moves off at a 45 degree overall angle from its previous facing.
