+25% food consumption not really a option you can afford
Ive been testing about a bit with race choices, in my strategy picking the +25% food consumption is something i would consider as to be able to spend more points in more important fields however having tried it a few times it seems it's an option one usually cannot afford. This is because you would often come to lack food with youre starting planet if you pick this option, starting poppulation is iirc 100K which will consume 125K food with +25% food consumption and a starting planet typicly has about 115-120 food + modifiers early on, so if you don't have something like +10% food production on youre home planet what will happen is that you will go in the red right away and run out of food in a mere few months after which youre poppulation will go into revolt mode to the point that all production will seize. This makes the +25% food consumption option in the race sellection screen practically worthless as probably 9 out of 10 games you will fail from the start.

Very probably you have not discovered how if you build many mines, you need a lot of food.
At this game, when you know a few things about how stop revolts, food and lack of resources, you play without problems easily.

Re: +25% food consumption not really a option you can afford
I beat this game easily on hard, surely i know how to handle food in my empire, thats not the issue.
Besides, this issue is one that occurs purely at youre home planet at start when you still have only that planet, not when an empire is already build.
The problem is that if you pick +25% food consumption in race sellection that more often than not you will have a fod deficit on youre starting plannet from the start, and youll then quickly run in red which will make youre home planet revolt and become useless. This usually doesn't happen on another setting like - or +10% food consumption because then the food produced at the home planet is typicly adequate.
I guess the issue might be resolved though by simply breaking down a few buildings and build a farm or 2 extra at start, given though how limited you are in production and tech at the start thats not really something i'd like to do.

Yep you've got too much starting population on your home planet for food consumption penalty. I ended up using austere foodstuffs initiative from time to time to gather food stockpile.

Ah ok, austee foodstuffs initiative ins indeed a great tip given that it's only penalty is an up'd cost to building construction which you won't do in youre starting planet anyway.
