Evade formations and distance

Post by graym »

If a line is charged from the flank does it flee as a column and if so is it measured from the element nearest to the charger or the element further away before there is a column concertina which effectively gives a greater flee move.

It gets a free 90 degree turn if required, so it is the most likely outcome that the line would turn into a column.

As for the mechanics, it is handled exactly like a normal 90 degree turn in the maneouvre phase, but instead of using the side edge of the front element as the new front edge, it is the side edge of the element closest to the enemy that is used as the new rear. This almost certainly means that the front of the column pulls back a little to join up with the rear element. The idea is that the distance between the evaders and chargers does not change and gives the chargers the same chance of catching them. I don't have my rules with me so I cannot quote the page number where this laid out, but it will be in the evading section.

Thanks, I found the section. It also seems that having your rear pointing in the right direction is handy for evading to strange places.

True, up to a point, but bear in mind that if the charge comes from the flank or rear the only legal direction of evade is directly away from the chargers.
