New iPad games to fuel my addiction....

Post by AEWHistory »

Howdy!

Not sure if this has been discussed, but I didn't see it. I'm an avid iPad player of Slitherine games and own most of the games you guys have published for iOS. I am hoping against hope that Strategic Command 3 might make it to iOS, but I'm just wondering in general if there has been a refocusing away from the iPad? It seems like for awhile there was a new game every other month and now they are much fewer and further between--or so it seems to me. Anyway, are there any iOS games that can be discussed? Can you tease me please? Pretty please?

And other iPad players, let's make some noise. We cannot let slitherine abandon us... even if Apple is an unrepentant Corporate PITA.

Best, Aaron

edit: damn auto correct. More like auto INcorrect.

In 2014 and '15 Slitherine was publishing a lot of their older games for ipad, such as Panzer Corps (2011 PC release) and Commander The Great War (2010?). Now that they have run out of suitable games from that list, the fastest they can put anything new for ios out is when a new PC game comes out, which I wouldn't consider "frequent" (although frequent enough to keep me entertained :) )

Strategic Command 3 strikes me as unlikely, the game (SC2) isn't exactly simple to play. If they did manage this I would expect to see people screaming "What about the Gary Grigsby titles for ipad?"

+1 ... I'm with you on more Mobile ports ...

I want to see HOS and COH ... give us more hex and nato counters on Mobile I say !

And what about CEAW? Didn't they pop that onto a PSP at one point?

Seems an IPAD could easily match that platform .....

CEAW was certainly on DS, I still have it. I'm not sure about PSP, but it is certainly possible.

The game has advanced a lot since 2007 and has seen 2 major sequels, one of which is already on ipad. I would be waiting on CEAW2, which the devs seem intent on making eventually.

ipad was never made for big and complicated war games though, Slitherine is just being very nice to you :D

Are you talking about the WWI game?

I have not seen CEAW for WW II on IPAD - although I would be happy if I were wrong =)

Yeah, the one already on ipad is WWI.

Many would be happy if CEAW as on ipad as well, but you'll need to wait for a sequel.

Playing this now on the iPAD.

It seems very entertaining so far ....

Would love to see the same treatment for CEAW - but I have seen some historical posts saying that it can't be done with the current engine.

That seems odd however - it was portable to PSP but can't be implemented on an IPAD?

Sorry to excavate an old thread but I wasn't around for awhile.

Supposedly one of Grigsby's titles has been in development for the iPad since about the 1890s, so that road has t least been considered. I have no idea what has happened there. I'm not so certain that Slitherine and Matrix have run out of suitable games from among their catalog and upcoming titles, but I might be wrong. Take SC3: it has been some time since I have played SC2, but I don't recall it being any more complex than CEAW or not much more. Is my recollection that far off I wonder.....

In any event, I really hope to see the iPad supports again by slitherine. It seems to me that all development has halted. I thought that it was simply Battle Academy that was on halt when the announcement was made awhile back, but it appears that what was meant was a much more complete withdrawal from the iOS market. I have certainly done my bit to support slitherine: I own most of their titles on iOS (albeit not the war hammer stuff) and the associated DLC. I am really jonesing for more content.... Help me get my fix slitherine.... I am an unrepentant war game junkie!

Yes - things are looking bad aren't they?

First - Order of Battle was going onto IOS - and now ... nothing - but they are cranking out PC DLCs

Pike and Shot is good on the iPAD but now, Sengoku not planned for iPAD?

Gary Grigsby's World at War .... in vapor land

What's the story Slitherine friends?

We've been pretty open that iOS is not really any longer a key target for us. We have (very!) limited bandwidth and have to choose where to focus for the best return for developers. That said, there are still iOS versions on the way. The general trend is for us to try and get the PC versions solid before we look at iOS because of the increased latency for patches and fixes caused by the Apple approvals process.

But as I say, there are new games on the way - HoN is in beta right now! :)

Cheers

Thanks for that info Pip.

When it comes down to whether a title gets ported to IOS or not, is it typically Slitherine or the Devs that make that initial suggestion / proposal?

Or does it vary on a case by case basis?

I don't think Ipads existed that far back. Neither did Grigsby.

I would expect the devs of the game would have a major part of it, they would probably be the ones tasked with 98% of the code-writing. Slitherine would have a kind of veto-vote though, as they aren't necessarily forced into publishing a mobile version, even if they are currently publishing the PC version.

We give advice but unless it is an internal project the developer has the ultimate call.

Thanks - I was just trying get my mind around the criteria or decision making process.

It's an interesting subject - the effort / reward mechanics behind mobile games.

In general, the public seems to be expecting / wanting 2.99 - 4.99 USD IOS games of quality.

Then there is the Android crowd that seems to like a lot of cheap stuff that maybe is not of the best production values / content quality - but they'll download it for free or pay .99 .

Slitherine tends to charge quite a bit more than other companies - but in general, I've been happy with my more expensive titles from you and I think the price is generally justified. (try to find another game like CTGW on mobile)

But I guess, the amount of sales in the "niche" market from more serious war / strategy gamers is not enough (in most cases) to justify the headaches from Apple policies or challenges of the Android platform vs sales revenue.

Tiller also puts out good products on Mobile - but the way he manages is to do a lot of "cookie cutter" stuff off of a few basic game systems. Reduces production / QA costs because it's essentially the same game with different maps, missions and OOB. He gets his share of criticism because of that as well though.

Well, we can hope that in the future, the mobile path gets considerably brighter and the porting option becomes more lucrative to both Devs (and Slitherine).
