Order of Battle Addiction

Post by richfed »

I am retired now, so I have plenty of time ...

Yesterday, other than to get up and grab a quick bite or scoot off to the bathroom, I was playing OOB Pacific ... until about 5:30 AM ... straight thru, 12 hrs + -- 15, actually. My eyes ere blurred and my legs were stiff, but man, I had a good time.

Playing the campaign as the allies ... was just finished with the Guadalcanal battle [I won a weak victory there - felt like I lost, but the game said it was a victory, so off to the Solomon Islands. So far, that seems to be the very best in the campaign series of battles. Lots of fun and really enjoying the game. Really looking forward to the upcoming add-on, Marines Corps.

I should have saved stuff, I know, but I was too busy playing. :D Some stuff:

-- I have a i7 processor, 16 GB of RAM, AMD HD 7700 series graphic card, Windows 10 Pro-64 bit]; the game does crash on occasion. Once, I was hovering the mouse over the specialization screen and it just went black and returned to the desktop. Auto-save saved the day! Another time I thought it crashed, but it really was just minimized. This apparently was caused by my cloud backup [iDrive] popping up a finished notice. Nothing too serious.

-- I had a situation in the Solomon Islands were I placed a big gun on a tiny Island near the Japanese main airfield. I had another unit on a nearby Island and the gun would target its own unit on the red Target - multiple turns. Just for the heck of it, I fired, but there was never any effect. Seems like a little bug there.

-- In the naval engagements [Midway, Coral Sea, etc], it seems as if the Japanese destroyer torpedoes are super charged, longer ranged, and possibly firing their guns on the same turn. Is that WAD?

-- Perhaps the AI should be stiffened a bit in the Guadalcanal battle. I felt like they just gave up half-way thru. Like I said up top, it was a very weak VIctory for the Allies.

Just a few things I have noticed - and remembered - overall, the game is great in most every aspect. Keep it up!

Be sure to take a break to walk around at least every few hours... In the worst-case scenario, sitting in one place for very extended periods can cause a pulmary embolism and lead to death.

Historically, the Japanese had far superior torpedoes compared to the Americans, and it's reflected in the game - most importantly in them having a range of 4 hexes compared to the Americans' 3. They should not be both firing and torpedoing during the same turn, however.

Maybe we need to put on the box "Playing can seriously harm you and (your relation with) others around you" :)

Nah, you should put "Playing this will improve your life, at the expense of everyone else's"

That would sell a lot these days.

I always found that playing too long until I was excessively tired caused a throw-away kind of generalship that led to horrific losses and bitter defeats. Your loyal troops really won't appreciate it if you play for too long...
Favourite Games Before Panzer Corps: Pacific General, People's General, Panzer General II... pure magic!
