AI Thinking

Post by cbrd1999 »

The AI takes quite a while to take its turn.
I only play single player campaign and the game is fully updated.

In my output_log file, I had 100s of these errors:
(Filename: Line: 1682)
HandleD3DDeviceLost
HandleD3DDeviceLost: still lost
Skipped frame because GfxDevice is in invalid state (device lost)

In a previous game where this has happened, I made a shortcut to the executable, and added the options on the command line to limit the game running on a single thread.
So I did the same:
("D:\games\Order of Battle - Pacific\Order of Battle - Pacific.exe" -force-gfx-st)
Now it has sped up the AI turn from 10 or 15 minutes to 4 or 5 minutes.

Is there some other solution to this?

I'm a little confused... You say the game ran faster when you limited it to a single thread?

That's completely counter to my expectations... The AI is designed to run multi threaded.

The skipped frame errors you see usually happen if the game isn't in focus or the computer went in and out of sleep.

No idea why. I added those to the command line and have the AI Animation speed set two notches slower than full. Sometimes the AI only takes 5 seconds, other times 2-3 minutes.
Before doing this, I could go to the bathroom, go outside to have a smoke, come back in and still be waiting.

Are you playing the same scenario? I think it's probably just coincidence, perhaps the scenarios you are playing now require less complicated calculations by the AI?

I would be really surprised if running single-threaded helped, to the point that I would recommend you go back to playing without that command.

It may be be a coincidence, either way though, it is still slow. Ive tried window mode, lower resolution and graphic settings, and just about every option in settings. I am not sure if running it on windows 10 would help.

Please try to disable all background programs in case these are interfering with the normal running of the game.
You can do this by running msconfig and disabling all non-windows start-up programs and services.
Then once you have disabled all non-Microsoft services, please run the game and see if the issue persists.
If it does not, please then reopen msconfig and reenable those services, one by one, until you find the program causing the problem.
A tutorial on how to do this can be found below:
