Order of Battle: Morning Sun Infographic

Post by Daniele »

The second Sino-Japanese War was a cruel and bloody conflict often overlooked due to its proximity to the Japanese entry into World War 2 at Pearl Harbour. But the events of this campaign had a great impact on the future of the people and armed forces of both nations.

This conflict, and its protracted nature in the later years, could be seen as one of main causes of the final Japanese defeat. It greatly drained the Empire’s resources, forcing it to deploy thousands of soldiers and war-ships and defend against repeated guerrilla attacks.

In Order of Battle: Morning Sun, the second expansion of the innovative wargame Order of Battle: Pacific, you will revive the battles and operations of this crucial war, from the initial boarder’s skirmishes to the massive invasion of the inland China.

Have a look on the infographic below depicting the main stages of the War, and don’t forget to share your thoughts on the forums!

I'm fairly sure a billion troops didn't fight at Wuhan! That's 40% of the world population at the time.

Over one million actually, indeed. Well spotted.

But don't forget, in the highest level the enemy has extra strength...;)

Question: What is the significance of the partial/full shading of strength symbols in the infographic? For example, in the Battle of Shanghai, all of the Chinese troops are dark blue but airplanes are half light blue / half dark blue. Only a small portion of tanks and ships is fully colored.

Partial Answer (came to me while I was typing): Each troop symbol is 100,000 troops. Each airplane symbol is 500 planes. Each tank and ship symbol represents 100 units of each. Fractional depictions are needed here and there.

Remaining Question: Above explains why some symbols are fractionally shaded. Why then, if Japan has 3,000 planes in that battle, are two additional completely light-colored airplanes shown for a total of 4,000 planes? Why not show just six fully-colored airplane symbols?

These things bother me. It comes with the territory of strategy game playing.

Well, about Battle of Shanghai.

In English Wikipedia 3000 planes are specified, I think it a mistake.
In other Wikipedias 500 planes are specified. Similar to the truth :)

Think, 3000 planes participated in one fight and where they got to then? Why further them isn't present?

Such quantity is comparable with all aircraft of Germany on east front at the beginning of war with the USSR.
