Revisiting Drawn Games...

Post by eddieballgame »

I was reading the post by "stockwellpete" in the "League of Extraordinary Gentleman" section. It is titled "Drawn games and other new ideas for LOEG . . .".
Very good stuff. The post basically was on how to score the value of the types of drawn games that can be attained.

I am quoting now:
"Drawn games and other new ideas for LOEG . . .

Just an idea for the organisers to consider for Season 11 of LOEG and beyond. There are three types of draw . . .

i) mutually agreed draws where neither side breaks (these are often agreed after just a few turns each)

ii) draws that go the full distance (24 turns) where neither side breaks (these are very rare)

iii) draws where both sides break at the same time (these happen from time to time)

At the moment in LOEG all types of draw are awarded one point to each player. What about, in future, if 2 points were awarded to each player involved in the type iii) draw? This would reward players involved in an adventurous game over players involved in a more sterile contest.

Just a thought. :)"

One of the scoring variations that seemed to garner a lot of support was the:
4 pts for a win, 2 pts for a draw ( in the ii & iii categories ) 1 pt for a mutually agreed draw, & 0 for a loss.

I will offer another scoring variation. One which, certainly, rewards a victory; while also rewarding those that "fight to the end". The incentive to risk losing now has some value.
5 pts for a win, 3 pts for a draw ( in the ii & iii categories ), 2 pts for a loss, & 1 pt for a mutually agreed draw.

Awarding a loss with more pts than a "mutually agreed draw" may seem absurd, but this scoring variation does put more emphasis & value on playing out a battle. In a tournament setting, one could not "mutually" draw his/her way to victory.

The 2 pts for a loss could be modified as per the point spread of the battle. Or, for example, the loser would have to score some points in the battle to qualify for receiving the 2 pts.

All my posts are "good stuff"!!

I ended up using this system for the FOG Digital League, which followed on from LOEG, and it seemed to work very well. I am not in favour of giving more points for a defeat than a draw because sometimes players have to fight and manoeuvre very cleverly just to get a draw against a better player, or on a battlefield that favours the opponent's army. When I relaunch the league after the official release of the FOG Unity version I will keep this system in place.

"5. Winning league points

Points will be awarded for wins and draws as follows . . .

4 points – win
2 points – a draw where both armies break on the same turn
1 point – any other type of draw
0 points – loss

To win a game a player must “break” the opponent’s army. Games where neither armies break after 24 turns will be treated as draws (1 point to each player). The “marginal victory” rule will not apply in any circumstances.

If two or more players finish on the same number of points at the end of the season, the player with the most wins will be placed higher. If players have the same number of wins then the committee will look at the result(s) of the matches between those players to ascertain the final placing in the league table."
