Game crashes at start

Post by brianjones »

The game installed successfully and I updated to the latest version. I was able to run it just fine and completed the first two tutorials. I quit the game and powered down the computer. I tried running it the next day and it crashes at startup every time. I uninstalled and reinstalled just as before but it still crashes.

The steps are:

1) Start the Game Menu.
2) Click the "Play Order of Battle - Pacific" button.

The game will crash and show a dialog titled "Oops" and stating: "The game crashed. The crash report folder named ...".

The attached zip file contains all the requested logs and data files.

Display Memory: 1760 MB
Dedicated Memory: 192 MB
Shared Memory: 1568 MB

on chip vga with shared memory don't always work, or work well with some games, dedi cards are better, but try and update drivers to see if it helps.

please make sure all game pre requisite are installed with the game, even if you think or fully know there are already installed, it will only over write, and it may be that you have a older or newer version of these where as the game in question may need a certain version.

as game needs drx 9 even if you have 11 or 12 installed same as all other files games comes with

So far I have reinstalled Windows 10 (reformat and fresh install), made sure the drivers are current, and reinstalled Order of Battle: Pacific. On a completely fresh system and with a brand new install of the game I can run the game once flawlessly. When trying to start it again I get the same error dialog as before. So it would seem that the drivers are not the problem since it does run perfectly once. The problem is with any further attempts to start the game. It doesn't matter if I reboot as it still errors out.

When installing the game I made sure the "DirectX 9" check box was checked (it was by default). I witnessed the game's installer install DirectX 9. I did not see any errors at installation so we may assume that the prerequisite was met. Please remember from the earlier posts that the game runs perfectly exactly once and no more. Because it runs perfectly once, I believe we can assume that drivers, DirectX 9 installation, or other prerequisites are not the direct problem. I may be wrong but it appears to be something in the way the game interacts with the system on the first run by changing settings files or registry entries or something. Strangely enough when I uninstall and then reinstall the game it still will not run. Whatever is changed is beyond the reach of the game's uninstaller.

as you also have all the pre requisite installed and double checked, and yes it runs once, something on your setup is stopping the game at some stages of working and to me it's a software not game issue, as the fault isn't logged in the game files provided as i can see anyway, so the developers will need to look at it and give there opinion on it, all i can say is check your firewall and anti virus to see if either have logged anything game related and also windows event viewer, just incase a screen save or power saving setting has interfered etc.

as it's my opinion it's not game related i'm sorry to say but some piece of software, but as to what is anyone guess i'm sorry to say and agree with you
something in the way the game interacts with the system on the first run
is the problem, but what as it doesn't do anything as it hasn't happened on any ones else's pc with the same error, normally if something doesn't run it never does until pre requisite or drivers are updated, are you also running the latest game version?

apart from this all i can do is say wait until either a developer looks at it or another staff member, as i can't see any errors game related in the info provided, but they maybe able to, good luck

Please try to disable all background programs in case these are interfering with the normal running of the game.
You can do this by running msconfig and disabling all non-windows start-up programs and services.
A tutorial on how to do this can be found below:
https://us.battle.net/support/en/articl ... plications

I suggest also to try installing in a different folder than C:\Program Files(x86)\..... Try installing the game in C:\Games, for example.

Thanks for the ideas. I have actually tried installing in the installer's default folder with exactly the same results. Also, I completely reinstalled the OS on a newly formatted drive and tried installing and running the game with exactly the same results. Clearly, on a newly installed OS there would only be the bare minimum of background processes running so I don't think that it's a background process interfering with the game.

Have you tried deleting the options file(s) before running the game again in case some bad setting is being written that doesn't exist during first run.

Cheers

I tried that before by removing the entire "Order of Battle - Pacific" directory in the "Documents/My Games" and trying to run it but it still crashed in exactly the same way. I just tried deleting just the options file (options.dat) and it still crashes. I also tried deleting the entire "Settings" directory and it also still crashes.

Do you have a dual monitor?
If yes, then please shutdown your laptop, unplug the external monitor, switch on and before running the game make sure to delete the "Setting"s folder in the "Documents/My Games".
