multiplayer upgrading of units in the field

Is there a rule about using prestige in the multiplayer games to upgrade existing units in the field rather than/in addition to buying new units. This can significantly change the balance of a scenario, so I don't want to be doing it if there is an unwritten rule against it. It can really mess with your opponent's head, and strategy! :D But I'd hate to be accused of cheating if we're not supposed to do it.

Oh no, that is a great strategy and one I utilize when I can.
It helps the other player put their big pants on. ;-)
