New and have a couple of questions

Post by craig81 »

Hi all,

I've only very recently started historical wargaming and my FoG rules arrived not so long ago. I haven't read all of the rules but flicking through I have a couple of questions...

1. Why are the distances used in the game e.g. movement and shooting so low? I will be using 10mm models for games but even a 5" move in open ground and a 6" longbow range seems very low to me. Am I missing something?

2. What benefit does the longbow give over normal bows? I think I saw a better outcome against heavier armoured troops but there is no benefit to range over a standard bow from what I can see.

Thanks,
Craig

The distances for shooting are based on the historical ranges and the assumption that a base represents around 250 men. Movement is, I think, a bit more of a judgement thing which when combined with shooting ranges means that troops approaching, say, bowmen are shot at enough but not too much.

I don't know what rules you have previously played but there is/has been a tendancy for rules to over state shooting ranges compared to their figure scale.

That was its historical advantage, effective battlefield range was not materially different from other bows. The advanteg compared to bows is significant in the game.
