Points available for allies

Post by philbagnall »

I'm sure I must have missed this in the rules but can't find it, or in the messages here.

Is there a fixed minimum/maximum number (or proportion) of points that can be used on an allied contingent when making an army list? I can see that there will be a self-imposed need to keep the size to 200-250 points max for command/control reasons (& by that argument a largely/wholly drilled ally force might manage a higher points list than an irregular force) but IS there a specified upper limit? (plotting a numidian force with the Juba II allies of principate roman, so am hoping to squeeze a fair number of expensive legionaries in!!)

The main army must contain at least the minimum number of troops specified in its own list. Other than that the ally contingent must not exceed the maxima in its own army's allies list.

There are plenty of historical instances of allied contingents being more than half the total of an army. On the other hand you would not find it optimal from a command-control point of view as the allied troops can only be affected by their own single general.

Thank you - that's what I thought likely on my reading but your confirmation is very helpful
