contact in rear at impact and already in combat

Post by domblas »

yest at montpellier a situation arose that we had problem to solve

we had 2 BG of 4 cav in one rank fighting against each other

my BG was charged by a Bg of 4 Lh in 2 x 2 rear

as rule said i turned one base and we fought at impact

the problem was: we saw on this forum that at impact each one must have the same number of bases fighting so may we have fought with 1 base each? 2 base each? or 1 base for me and 2 base front for my oponent?

Depending on how the charger BG hits, it will contact one or two cavalry bases. As you are asking, I suppose they contacted two. The rules say (pg. 91) that in impact they can fight: "This includes bases contacted to their flank or rear which were unable to turn because they are already engaged to their front." So, if there are no cohesion losses, the LH rolls two dice at ++ and the Cavalry rolls four at --.

Then in melee, bases with enemies in the front and rear have to fight against the enemy in their front, so the charged cavalry will have three dice (if no cohesion loss) against the cavalry at their front and one against the LH, while their enemies have four cavalry dice and two LH dice. The sandwiched cavalry will suffer an extra - POA for fighting in two directions against both enemies.

In the impact phase it is contact which matters.

If the cavalry were in one rank then they don't turn to face as they already have an enemy in close combat to their front. They will fight in the impact phase with four dice at --ve against two dice at ++ve for the Light Horse.

In which case they don't get the fighting in two directions -ve POA because they aren't. However, the Light Horse will get two dice at the Cavalry with no reply.

José's reply is correct, Dave's is wrong. (Because the rules require 1 base to turn, as Domblas stated in the original query).

As discussed last night, just because you don't know the rules, doesn't mean to say the right tactics don't work :)

I have 3 things to say to Dave "No DICE" Ruddock

1. Don't ever let Dave umpire a tournament- I think the score is at least Hamster 15 Dave 1 (he got one rule point right last night)
2. That shows the rules are representing the period more accurately than certain other rules that may be available
3. Buy some dice- you're not borrowing mine again! (Jammy goit)

Oh Congrats on your victory!
