Is a charge ever not a charge?

If a fragged BG is charged but another BG declares an interception charge such that the fragged BG is not actually contacted does the fragged BG have to make a CT for being charged?

Yes.

Rationale - the troops don't know for certain that they can rely on their friends to stop the enemy charge.

From the sequence of events:

*Declare all charges.
CMT for skirmishers or missile foot wishing to charge non-skirmishers.
CMT for shock troops wishing to avoid charging.
CMT for skirmishers not wishing to evade non-skirmishers.
*Resolve cohesion tests for FRAGMENTED troops being charged. If they break: Resolve cohesion tests for seeing them break.
*Make their initial rout move.
*Make interception charges.

The test for being fragmented when charged is made BEFORE interception charges - so yes, the fragmented BG has to test for being charged.

Cheers, that is what I thought it was.

I agree in the case of normal interceptions, but what about a flank intercept, which "cancels" the charge? I think the CT is not taken in that case, as the charge does not take place.

However, in the sequence Terry posted the test takes place before the intercept charge so is the charge cancelled at that point?

No rules to hand so when does it say intercepts are declared? That will determine when the charge is cancelled.

The full sequence of play is clear on this. Interceptions definitley happen after the test for fragged troops receiving a charge.

When the issue arose it was made more complicated by the fact I forgot that light troops charging fragged troops don't force a test. Then add in that the light troops in question needed to pass a CMT to be allowed to charge, then they hit another BG and could potentially step forwards into the BG that they may have failed CMT to charge.....

In actuality it was simple in last nights game the charged BG shouldn't have had to test as when I finally broke the protecting light horse and pursued into the still fragged enemy BG I was light troops but as it passed anyway then the BG of 5 bases (remaining from 8) of unprotected medium foot bow swordsmen proceded to beat me at impact (1 dice at - vs 2 superior at +) and in the melee (2 dice at 0 vs 4 superior at 0) and in the next melee (3 dice at 0 vs 4 superior at 0) by which time I was getting a bit annoyed. My opponent kept pointing out that I was not failing my CT or death roll but that isn't the point.... To lose an impact like that is essentially a 1 in 36 chance, to lose the two melees it is 6.5% and 15% respectively

It is that pesky wording: "It cancels the enemy battle group's charge completely"

Maybe the completely should go, then.
