Only thing "odd" I notice is the AI seems to be very hesitant to buy cavalry in skirmish battles. Had a few medium size where the Ai only had 1 or no cavalry units. Not sure if this is the intent or not, or just some mystery in the code
Which year was the battle? Near the end of the century, cavalry was out of favor due to better infantry tactics, firearms, and less samurai (attrition). Mounted troops are always noble samurai instead of common troops. I bet it is due to a combination of battle size and army list.
If you play enough skirmish, you will see what the weaknesses of cavalry are.
When you have finished any outstanding MP games, you are advised to delete v0.3 and download v0.4.
You can delete SP v0.3 in game in the Historical Menu.
Because it has no scenarios, there is no in-game way to delete the MP version. You will find it in
My Documents/My Games/PIKEANDSHOT/Multiplayer.
This means that deleting it from the iPad may not be possible except by deinstalling and reinstalling the game. If you do not want to do this, you can keep both versions on your machine - you can tell which is which because v0.3 is called "Sengoku Jidai" and v0.4 is called "Sengoku Jidai Skirmish".
The new version has the following changes:
1) Bows can shoot overhead.
2) Honjins will disperse rather than routing.
Been playing around with skirmish mode, good stuff. However, I do think balancing needs work, primarily with how disorder works.
I realize that Japanese infantry formations were never as dense as European pike blocks, but, as things stand, Yari and non-light missile troops (who are usually the only kind you have) are equally disordered by rough terrain. This means that there is no particular reason to put missile troops in difficult terrain, since cavalry is so rare. Also, since troops move so quickly, there ends up being a lot of fighting in forests between Yari troops. One of the strengths of the vanilla game is its division of troop types into terrain roles, and, at the moment, I'm just not seeing that in the mod.
Missile troops do seem to deal out a lot of damage in compensation; but with many infantry troops running 3 tiles, my battles so far have involved little in the way of skirmishing or maneuvering. Usually the missile troops just have to get out of the way as the masses of Yari fight each other.
As a side note, teppo seem weirdly uncommon even in the later date army lists. I know that they never made up half of armies as in Europe, but I would expect more than the tiny number (1-2 at small) that the armies tend to appear with. It's my understanding that by the end of the Sengoku period, there were considerably fewer archers than gunners in Japanese armies.
Thanks for your comments.
The thing is, the samurai are well adapted to the terrain and that was the original intention of the mod. Lots of fighting in the forest sounds right to me.
The reason why missles are warriors is because I want them to fight melees than run. In real life, these are actually mixed units with spear and sword support. But I don't want to give them % spear / sword so that they don't get POA in melee to reflect that they are generally missile troops. It is also consistent with FoGR Japanese army list.
If you think they should be light foot to enable skirmishing, then I will explore and test. Actually i have some ideas for historical scenarios that classify them as light foot.
What do the others think about this suggestion?

As for teppo numbers, again this is based on FOGR army lists. You "should" be able to buy more based on armylist.txt. BUT results aren't as planned
It is just the way the code allocates the purchasable numbers in Skirmish mode. And they only give you just one slot. I have to take this up with Richard.
Nothing in particular. With Japan's terrain, it is not unlikely that battles are fought in the woods. Even for big battles, there will be wooded parts in the battlefield where figthing might have happened. But thanks for bringing this up. I will see what can be done.
Due to the setting we won't really get a variety of troops. Mostly warrior units of different size and quality.
Is there any interest in a strategic campaign? I'm currently running two ECW campaigns and have had a few ideas for a multi-player bun fight for the Shogunate.
Great mode.
Mounted Samurais Yumi, don`t you think should be Light Horse? In the period they was using ponies. The western horse import made development of impact oriented cav possible. Before those was skirmishers.

Hi guys. You may have seen the announcement already. A fully-featured game based on my mod is in the works.
It will have a lot more features than just Skirmish.
