Commanders disappeared during Brisbane mission

Playing Brisbane as Japan and noticed that all 5 of the commanders I started the mission with were gone. Didn't notice right away, so can't tell if it happened due to reloading the game or after ending the turn (happened around turn 20 as I approached Brisbane VP). Unfortunately, I don't have a save point from when I still had them. Commanders were still gone when I started the next mission. Major bummer and all.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? Is there a way to manually restore these commanders to my campaign?
