Campaign Size

Post by GBISSET »

Ive been enjoying the Turkish campaign, but find the numbers involved too large for my taste. Is there a way to see how big each campaign is before starting it? Im quessing ECW would involve the fewest units/numbers.

Thanks,

And where do the other campaigns fall in complexity? Im especially interested in the one that uses army lists on the non-historic map.

My suggestion is that campaign designers might want to mention how complex their scenarios are in the description.

Thanks!

There isn't really much difference in the complexity of the campaigns, except that the ECW campaign is slightly less complex than the others because it has less provinces. The others are all of roughly equal complexity.

The higher troop numbers in the Turkish campaign do not mean more units. The game engine limits armies in battle to a maximum of 64 units per side. Because of that constraint, the larger numbers in the Great Turkish War campaign are achieved by changing the representational scale rather than by additional units. So instead of a pike and shot unit representing a battalion of 500 men, it represents a brigade of 2,000 men.

I see. I quess I would prefer there was a way to scale the campaigns down, but for now I think I can get the effect I want by adjusting my tactics.

Thanks!

Indeed. Having several smaller armies is a viable strategy.

Incidently, I did try the generic pike and shot campaign for the Poles vs Turks, and am getting less units , which I prefer.

I think this might be because the Turks are not receiving a huge bonus from their off-map provinces, which they do in the other campaign.

So I am just bringing 100 pts or so more than the Turkish target army I want to attack (so they dont flee) and leave my less favorite troops in the rear as a reserve or beseiging provinces.

BTW, I am having a lot of fun with the Polish cavalry, at times riding right around the Turks to find their cavalry and take that out, which usually results in them breaking.

I guess this is because many of the Ottoman provinces in the Great Turkish War campaign are poor for tax (e.g. Mountains) and hence there is a larger off-map income to compensate. (The off-map income is calculated automatically depending on the starting on-map income to achieve the correct balance to fit the difficulty level). Obviously more than half of the Ottoman Empire is off the map anyway.
