Yeah Fallschirmjager vs tanks usually doesn't end very well. If you drop them too far behind enemy lines & don't have a plan to get help to them quickly, that's a guarantee. And mind you, this is still 1940. You don't stand any chance at all against the Russian tanks down the road.

My paratroopers usually have a short and unsuccessful career too.

The exceptions are Norway where the bad weather protects the transports from fighters, the Hague in 1940 if they all cluster round the field gun, in the 1941 Greece scenario where a strategic bomber and a para unit are good for taking Keramoti early on, and in Minsk 41 where the paras capture airfields so that the recon bombers can refuel.

I have had some limited success by dropping them immediately behind enemy lines during the initial attack but I'd usually be better off with an extra 105 field gun and some pioneers.

Indeed. Once you get past the first few Barbarossa scenarios, there's really not going to be any survivable AND useful opportunities for you to drop them IMO. That said, there's nothing at that point preventing you from switching them over to a Pioneer or Grenadier unit. You'll carry over any experience & heroes you've accumulated.

I am getting pretty set with my core units and will soon be concentrating on just building up the experience of the units I have rather than building up green units. All I had left to take was Kiev. I felt that if I wanted to try and blast my way through and spend a lot of money I might have been able to take it. Has anyone done it in this scenario, and was it worth it?

I could have fought this one so much smarter but all in all not bad for the 1st time, I have got to remember to take it slow and give the time to set up a proper defense for the assault that comes out of Kiev, but now onto Vyazma. I remember the one and only time I played this before I won a Decisive Victory on the very last day. I hope this time is not as dicey, we shall see.
