Expand followed by simple advance and shift.

Post by lawrenceg »

I've just noticed in the rules that shifts are not permitted with expansions.

Am I right in thinking that if you do an "Expand followed by a simple advance" then you cannot do a shift during the simple advance?

Sort of:

You can only shift the full base if your move is an 'advance' directly forwards and more than 6MU from enemy

You can however shift upto half a base to avoid friends in a few more circumstances.

An expansion followed by an advance is an expansion.

So by "sort of" you mean "yes, you are correct"

When I started typing the reply I thought that you could use the half base slide to avoid friends in an advance after an expansion then I checked the rules to be sure and you clearly can't. I almost deleted my post then decided no to and went to bed.

Well, the post did contain the informtion I wanted, as well as the spurious information so it got the job done. It would, of course, be possible to expand as a first move and advance with a shift as a second move (in cases where a second move is allowed) so that was probably at the back of your thinking.

That was one of the possibles but on checking the rules that is not allowed either.

You can only shift on your first move.
In order to get the full base shift you must move directly forwards your full move
You can shift with a wheel or short move but only upto 1/2 a base and only to avoid 'clipping' friends.

The long and short of it was I thought there may be an abscure situation I hadn't thought of but in the cold light of the next day it seems the rules are pretty tight on this one.

You're right. I had missed that!

You can also do a 1/2 base shift into overlap, or to avoid clipping terrain.
