The assassination of Erzherzog Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo started the great war of the Central Powers (Germany and Austria-Hungary) against the Triple Entente (France, United Kingdom and the Russian Empire).

The German OHL has discussed the Schlieffen plan and the so called plan E. Both plans try to avoid the war on two fronts. The Schlieffen plan suggests to attack France through Belgium and outmaneuver the strongest army on the world. After France has surrendered Germany can focus on the war in the east. Plan E suggests the opposite namely to defeat first the Russian Empire and after that to attack France.

After long discussions the OHL decided to follow plan E(ast). The main targets are:

Support Austria-Hungary to defeat Serbia as quick as possible.

Defeat the attacking Russian troops in East Germany and Austria-Hungary and start a massive offensive against the Russian Empire.

Try to get as many allies as possible by showing successfully the military power of the Central Powers. Mainly the Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria, Romania, Italy.

Defend the western front at the Rhine River and avoid fighting the French and British armies. Consequently this also means to move out of the Alsace behind the Rhine River and leave it to the French.

Break the British sea blockade in the North Sea.

August 1914: The German army defends the Rhine River against the French and Austria-Hungary defends in the east against strong Russian attacks. Germany attacks the Russians in Eastern Prussia and Austria attacks Serbia. The German fleet enters the North Sea and two battleships move to Constantinople.

October 1914: The Alsace was taken over by the French Army and the German western front is defending the eastern shore of the Rhine River. Equipped with strong enforcements the Austrian troops invade Serbia. In East Prussia heavy fighting between Russian and German troops. The Austrian army was not able to stop the Russians east of Krakow and lost several cities. In the North Sea the first fights between the British and the German fleets happened. Two German battle ships reached Constantinople. Thus the Sultan of the Ottomans decided to join the Central Powers in this war. Strategically this is very important for the Central Powers because it allows to attack the British in Egypt overland. But an attack on Egypt will only start if it can be attacked from both sides. That means it is important also to get the Italians as allies.

February 2015: In the last months a French army tried to cross the Rhine River but was repelled. Since that time not the Germans nor the French are attacking at the western front. The German fleet is moving north to break the British sea blockade. Serbia is nearly defeated. The Germans are able to press the Russians back to the east. The Ottomans are under heavy pressure by Russian troops and British Colonial troops.

April 1915: A critical situation in the east could lead to a disaster for the Central Powers. The Entente landed troops at Gallipoli to capture Constantinople and kick the Ottomans out of the war. But the successful recapturing of all lost Austrian cities from the Russians brought Bulgaria to the Central Powers. That opened an essential railway through the Balkan for the Austrian troops that can now support the Ottomans in the battle. Also the two German battleships do their best to defend the Ottoman Empire.

June 1915: The Entente invasion at Gallipoli was repelled by Ottoman and Austrian troops. The break of the British sea blockade by the Germans was a decisive success and granted the Central Powers a lot of resources for the ongoing war. Due to the quick and convincing invasion of Serbia Italy has decided to join the Central Powers. The immense strategic advantage allows now to attack southern France and avoid the strong fortifications in northern France. Additionally the Italians attack Egypt from the west and the Ottomans from the east. In the East the German troops are approaching but find more and more resistance by Russian troops that show up in increasing numbers on the battlefields. If it would be possible to capture Brest-Litovsk and Kiev it could happen the Lenin will be successful with his revolution. That could end the war in the east immediately.

September 1915: The Italians enter the southern part of France. The Germans are able to capture the heavily defended city Brest-Litovsk and try now to reach Kiev in the east. Austrian, Romanian and Bulgarian troops try to invade Russia at the Black Sea coast near Odessa. German ships try to reach the Irish coast. This could lead to an Irish revolution against the British. In the east of the Ottoman Empire the Russian and British invaders are slowly forced back. The attack on Egypt seams to become a disaster. The British have set up a heavy defense and the Italians and Ottomans suffer high casualties and can’t break the defense. Enforcement, especially artillery and two battleships are send to the Egyptian battlefield to prevent a defeat of the Central Powers.

December 1915: The German fleet is ruling the North Sea. The fleet is moving south to the entrance of the English Channel. The Germans nearly have captured Kiev but there are more and more Russian counter attacks slowing down the German approach. The reinforcements in Egypt with artillery and more infantry stopped the slaughter of Italian and Ottoman troops. A strong Ottoman army is attacking Baghdad with the goal to reach Basra at the Gulf.

April 1916: Capturing Kiev allowed Lenin to start his revolution. But to end the war against Russia and to get a peace contract needs to remove all German and Austrian troops from Russian territory as quick as possible. Slowly the resistance of the British divisions in Egypt is fading. Also at the Tigris River the British Colonial troops are pushed back. A strong British fleet and the Royal Air Force are attacking the German fleet near the English Channel.

August 1916: The peace contract with the communists in Russia allowed to move all troops from the eastern to the western front. The attack on France has begun. In the north the Germans are invading Belgium. The Alsace is also attacked to recapture it from the French army. But the main strike against France will be done by the Central Powers divisions that are entering France via Italy and plan to attack the extremely strong French and British defense from the back. Egypt is captured and Basra is attacked. Some Italian troops now move west to attack the French colonies in North Africa. More troops are sent via ship to the shores of southern France.

November 1916: Attacking France from the east is nearly impossible. But the strong Central Powers armies coming from southern France break the French defense in the Alsace. The casualties on both sides are high. There are rumors about American troops on their way to Europe. Thus as many troops as possible are required from the Ottoman Empire and Egypt to join the battle of France. From Cairo there is a vital railway connection to central Europe that allows to move the troops quickly. The battle of Basra is still ongoing. The British Colonial troops fight up to the last man and are supported by battleships in the Gulf.

February 1917: Further approach in the northern frontline against France is not possible, so the German northern front was set to defense. But from the south the troops of the Central Powers slowly approach north. Basra is captured and nearly all troops are on the way to the railway stations to be transported to Germany and France. In Germany well equipped rebel troops try to prevent Germany from winning the war by attacking Berlin. Even some good German divisions from the western front have to move back to Berlin because the Austrian and Ottoman troops protecting Berlin come under hard pressure by the rebels.

May 1917. America has declared war against the Central Powers and American troops land at the French western shores and immediately attack. In the meantime the attack on the French and British troops is so strong that the Entente defense is slowly fading. But the Entente has the air superiority on the French battlefield. A critical situation shows up in the Ottoman Empire as surprisingly several very strong British Colonial armies attacked the exhausted Central Power troops that were on their ways to the railway stations. If the British could recapture Egypt and the Middle East and if the Americans could help the French army in time the success of the Central Powers would be in danger again.

May 1917: The catastrophe in the Middle East. The British overwhelm and annihilate many Central Power divisions on the Sinai. Only with greatest difficulties some few Ottoman and Austrian divisions could cross the Suez channel and set up a defense line together with Austrian artillery. If this line fails, Egypt will be lost. Only another Austrian infantry division and two battleships can reach the Suez channel in time to help. Similar situation in the eastern desert. The Ottoman divisions try to build up a defense but they are overrun by British troops.

September 1917: The battle in France is over. France surrendered but the British troops fought for several weeks at the English Channel. Now they are defeated and the invasion of England is prepared. The OHL plans to invade England from two sides and to capture London. The tough defense battle at the Suez Channel is still ongoing. Two battleships of the Central Powers will soon arrive to support. An Ottoman/Austrian army is build out of reserves to attack the British troops from the north and prevent the British to reach the roads that lead to Constantinople.

April 1918: The days that will bring the decision are coming. The German troops break out from the two beach heads and reach London from the north. The upcoming artillery bombardment of 7 artillery divisions and a battleship will pulverize the British defense in London.

July 1918: London is captured but England does not surrender. The defense of Egypt was successful.

October 1918: Again surprisingly strong British troops attack from Greece and try to recapture Belgrade and/or Constantinople. But in both cases the Central Powers can set up a working defense by quickly moving strong artillery to the battlefields and the British troops are defeated.

The war is over and it was won for Kaiser and Vaterland.
