Capturing Posrts

Post by JonnyA »

Enemy units that I am attacking that are in ports seem very difficult to kill. I have been besieging Athens for a year with a German armoured corps with 2 tactical bombers in support, but at the end of every turn it just gets repaired by the allies and I get nowhere. I have tried landing an additional unit on the hex to the south west of Athens, but that became out of supply very quickly.
Is it possible to blockade the port with a naval unit, or is there some other technique?

Infantry are best for assaulting cities, though 2 tac air & a tank should take it out pretty fast. You can also bombard by ship. You can supply your unit by ship by placing it adjacent to the unit that is on the coast and out of supply. Are you troops at full strength, high effectiveness?

I just updated the Strategy, Tactics & Tips document to include a strategy to capture Greece in 1-turn (thanks to Happycat). I tried this strategy against Staffenberg and got a < 1% (poor) result. I didn't inflict a step loss on the infantry corps until the attack by the Italian infantry corps. The infantry corps wound up at step 5 with an effectiveness of 13. Staffenberg hammered my fleet. One Italian BB was reduced to a step 1 and would have been lost except for the fact that the UK BB that was to finish it off bumped into an Italian sub. Anyway, I attacked with everything I could next turn and captured Athens (& Greece). I got my damage Italian fleet under the air coverage of the German TAC bombers. Anyway, the 1-turn conquest strategy I've told has a 85 to 90% chance of working (in 1 turn). (Un)Lucky me that I got a < 1% result. Still I took Greece in two turns.
