Pilgram-Lomnitz mission help

Post by FroBodine »

I am a newbie to this game, but I beat all the tutorial missions. I thought I'd try the first campaign mission, Pilgram-Lomnitz in the Thirty Years War campaign.

I have tried three times and get my booty kicked each time. The passes are so narrow that I can't form any sort of cohesive line.

What is the trick here. Shouldn't the first mission of the first campaign not be so dang difficult? Or am I just a really horrible player?

This last time, I at least got all my troops to the lake pass, and some even through. I sent cavalry around both sides, and my Tercios up the middle with a bit of cavalry along with them.

This was my best attempt, but in one turn, I went from 30% routed to 70% routed, and that was it. I got the enemy up to 34% routed, but that's the best I've done so far.

Any help is greatly appreciated. If this first mission is so dang tough, I'm scared to continue! But, I love this game so much.

Oh yeah . . . I'm playing on difficulty level 2, whatever it's called.

Thanks!

Well there are some good videos on Pilgram-Lomnitz by sukhoi. they are in French but even that that is a problem for you, you can see how he moves his troops and wins the scenario.

http://steamcommunity.com/app/312390/videos/

The historical scenarios have not been designed for graded difficulty, but for representing historical battles, mostly in chronological order. This means that sometimes the early ones are very difficult (for example Seminara in the Italian Wars set). We therefore recommend (in the manual) that after the tutorials you play some skirmishes to learn the game better before embarking on the historical scenarios.

All of the historical scenarios are relatively difficult, because they would not have much replay value if you could win them at the first attempt.

You don't have to play them in order. As I replied elsewhere, Rocroi is one of the easier ones.

Pilgram-Lomnitz is a lot easier than the next one in the TYW. I recommend purchasing the extra unit of artillery and moving both units into position to bombard the tercios in the "pass" before attacking them. A bit of concentrated musketry together with artillery fire should crack their morale enough for you to beat them.

Thank you, Richard. I am really not that interested in just playing generic skirmishes. I like developer made scenarios. I like the puzzle aspect of them, and the diversity that a hand designed scenario brings. That is why I buy games, to play the scenarios and campaigns the developers design.

This is why I keep stressing my suggestion to please put a difficulty level on every scenario and campaign. Even though Zarkarion's argument on Steam that this would be too subjective, I still think you, the developers, know the scenarios better than anyone, and can assign a very accurate difficulty description to each of the scenarios. Sure, what's hard for some may be easier for others, but it is still a VERY good indicator of the challenge of a scenario, and will be so helpful for us players in deciding what scenario to play.

Thank you, and I hope you add this. It will add so much to the game I believe for no extra coding work, other than adding a word to each of the scenario and campaign descriptions.

Thanks!

Yes, sukhoi's video on that battle is very helpful. I started off exactly like you, FroBodine, with Pilgram-Lomnitz as my first historical scenario and had initially some problems with it. But the video did a very good job in pointing out how to tackle this. I think it takes a while until a new player develops a good feel for the strengths and weaknesses of the units and can properly apply the rock-paper-scissors aspect of unit interaction to the game. The problem is that you need to have a good grasp of unit capabilities before you can develop a good initial battle plan with proper unit dispositions.

BTW, I very much agree with you that the game could use difficulty ratings for the scenarios. I'd rather have a subjective rating than none at all. It's funny that you mention this as I only yesterday posted this as a feature request on the forum.

Thank you, Fluffy! I will definitely watch the videos. I wish there were some good playthroughs in English, though.

Let's hope the developers take our suggestion to heart and add the difficulty ratings to the scenarios. It would be so helpful, and is a huge missing part of the scenario descriptions.
