Unless I can not add up Ben's score at the end of round 5 should be 108 not 107.

Spotted Dog productions has the latest folks. By one point Mr John Munro bagged first place on the podium in this year's Britcon. Ben Jones was a very worthy runner up and Hunter Hope was a very humble third. Another stonking event from Tim and crew. Well done everyone.

Re: Britcon 2015
That was only because we had to drop the lowest score mine was 19 from my win over John, his was 6 from his loss against me. I won 6 games ended up with more points than anyone else and came second by a point. Go figure!!!!

Re: Britcon 2015
I think, the dropping of a game does have its issues. Unfortunately highlighted by the Ben and John game. Even though it is clearly frustrating, fairness, Ben did shake hands at the prize giving.
Could we look at fixing the format at 6 games next year?

Re: Britcon 2015
Yes there was a geat deal of discussion about this at the end of the comp. Here's my suggestion.
1. Drop no scores.
2. For any who drop a game, at the end of the comp sub in a score which is the average of the other 5. i.e. assume the missed game is at the same performace level as the other 5. If you are a high performing player (win your other 5 and average 20), you get 20 for the bye / dropped game. Dropped games only by prior arrangement.
The disadvantage is it requires a bit of extra admin which may slow things down with final scores. Thoughts?
You might also find with this format you get a few more entrants if you know you can drop 1) the Friday game, 2) the last exhuasting game on the Saturday
or 3) aim for an early train on Sunday.

Re: Britcon 2015
First of all both Ben and I had a hoot throughout the tournament in that we invariably were on the table next to each other and had regular chats and a laugh throughout. A great guy and a great player who I hold in high esteem.
As for the result Ben was very unfortunate in that he beat me in our game fair and square and as a result went six games undefeated - a superb performance. Had I been in his shoes, Inwould have been equally gutted at missing out on top place. Having said this, I think the rule re dropping the lowest score has been in place now for I think three years and we all knew that was the situation when we signed up for the tournament. Inevitably when you have a rule then at sometime stage, something unexpected will happen and Insuppose this was it. There will equally have been other examples albeit less prominent where placing were affected by this rule.
Personally, I think if a six game tournament is on offer then players should be expected to play all the games. If they do not play one then their opponent should get a score for a bye and the non attending player has to accept he gets nothing at all.
Any way, I am sure the disppointment will make Ben even more determined next year to be number one on the podium.mhaving said that I am even more determined to make sure I beat him next year so that it is not an issue for him. Mind you it might be an issue for me if I have to drop my higher score. God this is getting complicated.
Finally, thanks to Tim and all the lads for a great weekend.

Re: Britcon 2015
Hmmm I think we are all on the same page here
1) A fair win by John as we all knew the format of the basho before hand and
2) We'd rather have a compulsory 6 games going forward
I suppose the really positive thing is John's magnanimity as victor and Ben's graciousness in defeat.

Re: Britcon 2015
These will be going on the BHGS site soon, but as Nigel asked so nicely, here's a preview:

Ignore the colour coding, it's something Richard was using for administrative purposes. Incidentally, by "Geoffrey" I assume you meant Richard (Jeffrey-Cook) who was the man chained to the laptop this year. If the individual round scores don't add up to the final total it's because they are shown rounded to whole numbers. It's not an error!
Regarding the format, we will be canvassing the opinions of players to improve things for the future. This includes, but is not restricted to:
Number of games played, 5 or 6?
Dropping rounds. This year we only had 3 people who wanted to drop a round when they entered so is it worth the extra administrative effort that it requires?
If we don't allow dropping rounds, do we go back to counting all of the scores? Whilst that gave us a controversial result this year, there is the alternative view that it encourages more aggressive play as a single bad result is not so heavily penalised.
Do we introduce a theme for Fog R? I think most people prefer themed tournaments but is there a reason to keep it Open? It would need to be a reasonably wide theme to allow the maximum number of players to participate.

Re: Britcon 2015
The other thing we noticed about "drop a round" was that it meant that more people remained involved in the race for placings right until the end. Thats quite nice

Shouldn't Adrian and Micks coloured squares by 20 not 0 as those where the byes?? Or does only Kevin get the 20 for the bye

Re: Britcon 2015
I would like Britcon to remain open or atleast have one completely open major BHGS comp a year... Actually I am not overly keen on themed events as it restricts personal choice of list...kevinj wrote:These will be going on the BHGS site soon, but as Nigel asked so nicely, here's a preview:

I said to ignore the colours!
We gave the usual 20 for "involuntary" byes caused by the odd numbers. People who voluntarily dropped rounds or who ended up taking a bye that wasn't scheduled scored 0. Incidentally,Simon LM also scored 20 for his bye, so it wasn't just me!

Then how come I fought Adrian game 5, not that I'm complaining. How was he that far up if the 0 was not a 20 Sunday morning.

Because we were feeding in a temporary score to ensure that nobody got an advantage by missing a round.

Re: Britcon 2015
By the way, it looks like some scores are wrong in the last round. Stewart Riddick won his last game by a big margin but did not see the scoresheet as this was filled in by his opponent. Have the scores been reversed. Stewart is shown as getting zero points for this game while I think he should have had about 23 points from our discussion on the way home.
