Hello All
Just a handful of quick ones on the Later Swiss:
Mirliton Swiss 15mm getting ready to be organised and painted. A few things to iron out for the organised pedant in me:
Generals - I've seen the various thoughts on basing these chaps up but for a consistent look etc. I was thinking of having some nice command bases made up on 40mm by 30mm bases. Otherwise would you go 40mm by 15mm to fit in with the pike blocks? Or else 40mm by 40mm for game effectiveness?
Pike blocks - I've got 6 BGs of 8 bases each and was going to do one BG per 'Canton'. Any thoughts on units that historically fought together? Can't find much electronically but I think there is some stuff in the old WRG books?
Halberdiers - well as this is one of the first ground-up FoG armies I'm making up I'm freed from the, er, other and older game system basing. Any thoughts on how best to base these chaps up? I'm torn between 40mm by 15mm to blend in with the pike units visually, with 4 figures per base, and 40mm by 20mm with three figures (kind of like Matt H's ones) which are exchangeable with DByouknowwhat. Definitely no to the double based 40mm by 40mm ones though... As for colours, should I mix them up within the BGs (I will have 2 BGs of 6 bases each)?
Thanks in advance
Simon

for my hellenes i've double-based the front 2 bases of any pike block, and added a wee general type figure to make it more like a diorama. you never get down to few enough bases for that to matter, and it makes the blocks easier to move on table. i've also painted them as "units". so each 8/12 of pikes has its own colour scheme.bertiebeemer wrote:Hello All

makes them look pretty good on-table.
for generals, her ein new zealand we're putting them on 40mm circular bases. makes them stand out more against the remainder of the army.

OK well have got off my butt and done a little reading as regards the pike blocks...
I've taken the reported numbers (via Ian Heath's WRG book) of the various contingents at Grandson (I think it was... doh!) and then worked out some proportions for the cantons and main dependencies and the large Basle contingent from the Lower Union, ignoring Zurich as they seem to have had a tiff or two during the course of the 15thC (and I don't have any flags for them...). Thus:
Berne - 12 bases (red / black)
Lucerne - 8 bases (white / blue)
Basle - 6 bases (white / red for Land and white / black for City)
Schwyz - 6 bases (red)
Fribourg - 4 bases (black / white)
Solothurn - 4 bases (red / white)
Obwald & Nidwald - 2 bases (red / white)
Uri - 2 bases (yellow / black)
Zug - 2 bases (white / blue / white)
Appenzell - 1 base (white / black)
Schaffhausen - 1 base (green / black)
I've also apportioned the halberds between the big four contributors and thrown in some skirmishers from Neuchatel, Vaud and Geneva for extra flavour.
Should all look good when they're done. Just don't ask for an ETA.
Still looking for some help on the halberd question though...

My Swiss halberdiers are 3 to a base on 40 by 20 but that is mainly because I used the army a fair bit under DBM.
One option would be 3 to a 15mm deep base and make some sabot bases so you can use them for DBx.
Personally i just rebased some more medieval halberdiers as 4 to a base 15mm deep but that is mainly because I have 12 bases 3 to a 40 by 20 anyway and until I based the extra figures I found I only had 4 bases of 4 to a base 15mm deep.
