Distinguished service medal...

It is 1965 and the US ground war in Vietnam is in full swing. As a US Army commander, wage a counter-insurgency (COIN) war to secure the Ia Drang valley, on the border with Cambodia.

Distinguished service medal...

Post by recon25 »

Having abit of a drama trying to earn this medal, and it's pretty much the only one I haven't got which is frustrating because I don't really see how I can achieve it. Typically my highest is 50 body count which is only half of the required amount. My political score is high, almost desieve if not is every time I try. Is that where I'm going wrong? Try to keep the political score low but every time I destroy a vc unit it will creep up. Any tips from the top?

If you're focused on H&M and you know how to play, getting the CMH, the DSM, or POW medal will be very difficult.

The problem with DSM is it requires a target rich environment. And a target rich environment requires low H&M.

It's a bit ironic in a way because if you are good, you never get the big awards. The big awards are for those who get themselves in a pickle and then achieve greatness by extracting themselves. I'm speaking in game terms, not real life!.

If you want to chase the DSM, get yourself ahead and establish good fields of fire and good recon. Then let H&M go to pot (no pun intended), and rack em up. I've not done this yet, but it seems like a logical way to get there. Gotta have the targets. Low H&M create more targets.

Cheers mate, had a few experiments and I sort of figured that out. Seem to work well with handful of green berets and a hand full of Cobras and have all the infantry units away from the action acting like a qrf force. Still haven't got close and seems like when I've established good view and fire arcs time is to short. I'll let you know when I've achieved it. Wish me luck. Anyone done this and got any other pointers your advice will be most welcome!!

Finally did it, my approach is at the bottom if you wish not to see it.

Wanted to copy and paste the screen shot of the end turn page but can't as I've got an iPad only. Kill ratio was 13 U.S. 33 VC and 135 NVA

Started out putting a FB a Huey ride away with the artillery and an armour unit I bought then left it to set up a FOB as close to the west as I could after about 8 turns. Bought a green beret unit and put both far west as I could to Ping NVA units as I know that's what most of the kills will eventually come from. Then with the remaining bought a cobra and used cobra's as the qrf and main killing instrument. In the end I must of had about 6 green beret units, 9 Cobras 2 tanks, 2 artillery. the tactic was so effective by pinging the NVA and some times Vc the Cobras will go and and destroy the target and fall back straight away with 95% of the action on the far west side. I broke the 100 kills at turn 35, thinking pretty pleased with myself thought I'll try and achieve the medal of honour award as well. However my tactic of keeping my political score low made out that had no infantry units as was an easy way to loose points and had no real estate besides the west side. Best part about having all the kills is the money, was able to afford 5 hueys and load them with infantry to villages in one turn. However I only achieving and end score of 53 political points. Thought the dsm medal be the hardest to tackle but might be wrong.

Hope this helps anyone that was trying to achieve the medal, got a completely different approach on the game now and really enjoyed racking up the kills especially before the way I played it this way I was getting 50 kills was the highest I could get and was pretty chuffed with the result.

Yeah thanks for the reading. That's fun this german army strategy (believe in maximum enemy loss will build the win), and finally in the 'body count' US official strategy too.. ("don't care the politics, kill all who's not smiling at us").
