March 25 1918, OHL report
The first phase of operation Michael is going well. We were able to break the British defense line east of Arras and are already starting to encircle Arras from the north.

March 30 1918, OHL report
Our plan is working well. We have capured Arras and Peronne. Now we attack the American troops around Bapaume from two sides and will soon defeat them.

In the centre our troops were following the fleeing French troops to the city of Villers-Bretonneux from where our artillery would already be able to hit the city of Amiens in the west. Some strongholds on the way were quickly destroyed by our Sturmtruppen.
Order of battle. Soon the final attack on Amiens in the west can start.

April 1918, A letter from the ruins of Amiens

Dear Hermine,
I write you immediately after the battle has ended. I am well and unharmed. But many, many others did not have that luck. We have hit the Entente troops very hard near Armiens. What I feared has happened. In addition to the British troops now also American troops fight against us. How should the German Kaiserreich stand against this overwhelming industrial power of our enemies? We have won battle after battle but it seems our enemies become stronger and stronger in the west. They have more tanks, more planes and more men. But still our artillery makes the difference.

Our last attack on Amiens started with the strongest artillery fire I have seen in this war. More than 10 divisions fired for hours on the city and the airfield. After that the Sturmtruppen did not find strong resistance any more. But the city of Amiens now lies in ruins.

For us there is no time to recover. The next large offensive is planned already for April. We will try to break through to the French coast. If we can manage this we could get a second chance in this war to attack Paris.

I fear the day when for the first time on the battlefield we experience that the Entente troops stop our offensive and we can’t defeat them anymore. This would be an immense blow to our morale. My hope lies on von Falkenhayn and Hindenburg that this day will never come.

Today I want to finish with good news. It can happen that I will be promoted soon. My company was leading the quick and successful occupation of Villers-Bretonneux that was a milestone for the attack on Amiens.

With kind regards
Karl

I worry about if you will see a successful end to the war at all now  ... Michael is easier than Georgette, and afterwards I can easily doom you in the Entente Offensives of 1918

Something was missing in Michael, but I do not know what.
I captured all victory objectives, even all cities and airports but got a Minor Victory. Only one British infantry unit (in the swamp) survived but it was not required to destroy all Entente units to get a Great Victory.

Mid of May 1918, A letter from Ypres

Dear Hermine,
our operation Georgette has ended and I can’t tell you whether we should be proud or disappointed about the final result. Begin of April we started our offensive on a complete front line to break through to the French coast. We were hindered by strong Entente troops and bad weather.

At least we have reached our minimal targets but we did not even come near the final target Boulogne in the west. The way was too long and the resistance too strong. Our losses were small but again we missed the chance to attack Paris. The Entente has brought immense American reinforcements and it looks like that from now on we are in the defensive. As I feared the morale of our troops is fading away quickly.

For me this is now the proof that my feeling of 1914 that we have lost the war already in the first months comes true.

I was promoted to a Major and surprisingly they gave me a division of tanks. I can’t feel glad about this. We will do our best and fight on the battlefields against superior Entente tank troops as long as we can. We will not surrender. I fear we will not see us again in this life.

I hope I can write you a letter again. I and many of my comrades have the feeling that our doom is approaching.

With kind regards,
your brother Karl

I have seen the map. With my strong heavy artillery and some good fighter planes I will try to hold all positions and go for the DV.

Oktober 1918, German Newspaper

CATASTROPHY AT ARRAS – GERMAN WEST FRONT CRUSHED
As the OHL informed us the battle of Arras ended in a disaster. Hindenburg tried to hold the cities Bethoune, Douai and Cambrai and divided the best German divisions that were so successful in the first four years of this war in three armies. The plan was to use the superior German artillery to weaken the Entente troops on their long way through the German defense lines. But the morale of our soldiers was so weakened that the defense lines faded away and our elite divisions were overrun by strong Entente troops. Our heroic troops fought until the last man but after no reinforcements and later even no resupply was possible any more they were annihilated.

Nearly all infantry, all our tanks and the core of the artillery was destroyed.

The rest of our armies including the still unbeaten air force are now moving to Mons for the last stand to stop the Entente troops invading the Vaterland. If you can, please pray for a wonder.

Ouch. Looks tough - especially the defeat of 2 of your 3 armies.

I may have to have a crack at this mod myself. But as always, it seems i have no time to play. So for the moment i contend myself with following your reports.

You're lucky the airforce survived - I fear you will need it at Mons.

Also have you got any reserves? If not then you will be in need of many conscripts.

And a disaster at Mons will not be the end of the world - the final mission is much kinder!

I guess I will try it this evening. It will be a short game at Mons having only the few troops that survived Arras and 400 Prestige points.

Arras worked until 5 rounds before the end. Then the Entente started to encircle my troops (=> no resupply anymore) and the Entente artillery came in range (=> suppressing my own artillery). Result: Disaster. I guess it could be possible to hold the lines with a different setup. Minimize the troops in the east at Cambrai (here were only weak attacks by the Entente) and setup more troops at the other two cities.

THE WAR IS OVER – THE GERMAN KAISERREICH DEFEATED BUT NOT INVADED

THE WONDER OF BRUSSELS

As the OHL informed us Generalfeldmarschall von Falkenhayn has proposed the capitulation of the German Kaiserreich and the whole Central Power countries to the Entente countries. The capitulation was accepted and negotiations about the conditions started already.

The remaining troops of our western armies were surprisingly able to hold parts of Brussels against an overwhelming superior might of the Entente troops. This heroic fight showed the Entente how high their losses would be if they would try to invade the German Reich.

God save our Kaiser Wilhelm II.

THE KAISER HAS LEFT GERMANY – THE GERMAN REPUBLIC WAS PROCLAIMED

The German Kaiser Wilhelm II has left Germany to Holland together with many leading officers of the OHL. The German revolution has ended the German monarchy.

General Hindenburg has refused to shoot on German citizens or soldiers and has set his battle-hardened army in a defense position at the Rhine River. The troops only defended themselves against attacks.

After the Kaiser had resigned the fights near Düsseldorf and Köln stopped. All weapons are silent now for the first time since 1914.

February 1915, a letter
The postman already shouted when he came up the road. “He is still living. Your brother is living. The letter is from him!”

Relieved and thankful Hermine is taking the letter and opens it immediately.

“Dear Hermine,
I am in a POW camp near Paris. I am not injured. After my tank was destroyed in the battle of Douai American troops have captured me. They have treated me well. They allowed me to write this letter now and told me that I will be released latest in one week.

I am coming home!

With kind regards,
Karl”

Hermine is weeping for joy and the postman leaves with the words: “That is indeed a lucky day for you, Miss Mankewitz. A lucky day …”

I always assumed Hermine was his wife or fiance.

That screenshot looks totally crazy. So many enemy units. Almost a joke!

Now you have finished the game, please give us a review of how you found it and also of the mechanics of it compared to normal Panzer Corps.

200 or so in Mons, the revolution is a lot kinder though (If you have a decently strong army including a few tanks then it should be a cakewalk). But the winning path has an equally nasty amount of opponents

Review

The feeling of playing this WW I Mod is similar to the very first Poland maps of Panzer Corps. Infantry and Cavalry are powerful. There are no tanks and no planes except the scout Zeppelins. Dominating is the artillery that is deciding over victory or loss. The artillery can shoot between 5 (!) and 7 (!) fields wide and has a strong impact suppressing the target immediately.

Thus in most maps it is deciding to destroy the enemies artillery first before they can hit the own artillery. If the own artillery is hit it will be suppressed and can’t cover the infantry any more. That is in most cases a very critical situation.
Fighter planes come later and tanks for the Germans even much later. Fortresses and barbed wire play an important role on nearly all maps.

The gas artillery I did not really understand. It is a single shot artillery. After you shoot it is changed to a moving shell that can be directed to the target inflicting high damage, but only once. After that you have to buy new gas artillery, deploy it on the map, move it near the target and shoot again. Very time consuming. Normal artillery is much more useful in my opinion.

I played on General level and had the feeling that the first three years are not difficult to be played successful but then in 1918 at the west front the difficulty is increasing very quickly from map to map.

The Schlieffen Plan: First small map to get familiar with the different troop types.

Marne: An important map. A DV will allow to attack Paris and maybe to defeat France. You have to destroy all French core units and capture all victory objectives. Later in the game French reinforcements spawn in the southwest and southeast corner of the map. I moved my troops on the left and right flank and not in the center. Because of that I have overseen a single French Cavalry unit in the center that was not moving and I did not get a DV.

Race to the Sea: Nice map where you really make a race with the French and British troops the reach the coast before them.

Poland 15: Invade Poland. Some weaker aux Austrian troops in the south will have problems to capture their victory objectives and have to be supported by the Germans in time to get a DV. The DV will open the way to Moscow.

Ostaufmarsch: Storm on Moscow. That is not the capital of Russia, so a DV will not end the war in the east. The Russian Tsar tanks are crazy. You get aux antitank Fahrpanzer but I never got them near the Tsar tanks to attack because the Fahrpanzers can’t cross fortifications and the Russian tanks always stayed on the eastern side of the fortifications. It was no problem to destroy the Tsar tanks with artillery and infantry.

Arras 17: First heavy fight against the British troops. A DV will allow to select to fight in the west, go back to Russia or kick the Italians out of the war. I decided to finish the Russians.

Estonia: Nice idea to help Lenin. The Germans have to move to the Russian capital Petrograd and capture all victory objectives. Spawning Soviet troops help the Germans. The DV will end the war in the east.

Michael: Now we are in 1918 back at the west front and the difficulty suddenly is increasing strongly. An important map because a DV all again open the gates to Paris. DV requires to capture all objectives. I fulfilled this but got only a minor victory and thus has no chance to attack Paris.

Georgette: More difficult than Michael. The routes are very long and a lot of enemy units stand in the way. I saw no chance to reach the coast in time and get a DV. I got a minor victory.

Arras 18: The doom of my army. I have chosen the risk and tried to get a DV (because it is the last chance to attack Paris) by holding all objectives. But my split troops could not withstand and were totally outnumbered. You have a big number of aux units but they fade away quickly. I could not prevent the enemy artillery to shoot on my artillery what started the disaster. A very interesting map and it would be a challenge to find a strategy to get a DV. A minor victory should be achieved without big problems by using all core troops to defend only one city.

Mons: I would rate it as a fun map. 200 enemy units (including around 30 artilleries) attack the Germans. The German aux troops are all standing on a plane field and are not hidden in fortifications (what they normally should be!?). The enemy attacks first and the useless aux units are gone quickly. I could hold Brussels because the enemy planes could not attack my ground troops. I had three strong fighter plane units covering all my (few remaining) troops. My artillery covered my troops and the enemy artillery did not come in range to fire on my troops because they were blocked by their own infantry that is crowding half of the battlefield. If the enemy artillery could fire on my troops the game would be over in one round for sure. But so I got a minor victory.

German revolution: Fighting in Germany against German republican troops. I avoided all fights and accepted a Loss. Wilhelm II was gone and WW I was over. So I got exactly the historical end.

I would recommend this Mod to all players that are interested in artillery duels and cracking of fortifications. There is an American path that I did not see. Maybe other players can report about it.

I will now have a look at the Grande Map with 75 rounds.

Concerning this AAR please note that the story of Karl Mankewitz, German Major in WW I is continued in the following WW II AAR ;) viewtopic.php?f=145&t=65020

Arras 18 doesn't let yet attack Paris, but it does let you launch the 'Fall Offensive', which is very different from other offensives.

And I'm surprised you found Mons fun, seeing as it tries to annihilate your army a second time.

The funny thing is that there are so many enemy units that they block their own artillery that could annihilate my army easily. If you would take out 30% of the infantry I guess the Entente artillery will come near enough to the German troops and will blow everything in the air.

The only possible problem that could have stopped a DV in Michael is if you only occupied the last objective on the last turn?
